It's NOT my listing. It's NOT anyone's listing. It is however one of the most amazing green-built homes asheville's amazing green built masterpieceAsheville and we have ever seen.  (see photo)

And I had the opportunity earlier this week to spend an hour with the genius who not only designed, but built it.

Here's how it happened: We were lost on our way to preview a home in Asheville, NCand stopped to ask  directions from a friendly neighbor... . He turned out to be The Man-He who not only discovered a totally awesome, south-facing mountain property, but recognized it as his opportunity to design a contemporary passive solar dream home.

He knew right away, he explained, that he would limit the disturbance of native vegetation and maximize the visual connection to nature on the three-and-a-half acre site. ( We love the idea of thoughtful site-planning, of course.)

Secluded, but only 15 minutes from downtown Asheville, and offering privacy and the shading of mature hardwoods, plus sunny southern exposure for organic vegetable gardens, this home is the epitome of  dreams-come-true for the  discriminating eco-friendly home buyer.

Our clients would faint with delight if they saw this green masterpiece!

"Are you willing to sell your masterpiece?" I asked .

"We can think of at least a dozen folks who would love to live here--180 degree pristine mountain year-around view"Who could wish for anything more?" we drooled.

The Man replied with a slow smile.....

" More, eh?How about an outdoor shower with that view- and three levels of outdoor decks, a stone patio, and my personally placed rock-garden landscaping  that  winds all the way down to the lower garden level and winter vegetable green house?"

Just for GREENIES-15 features for you to swoon over:

  1. Passive solar design
 2. low maintenance exterior
 3. highly insulated exterior walls and roof
4. high efficiency variable speed heat pump
5. recycled kitchen cabinets
6. milled on-site cleared and wind-falling trees
7. recycled greenhouse plastic vapor barrier under cement pad
8. natural boric acid termite treatment
9. foiled faced rigid insulation on roof
10. low VOC sub-floor and interior paint
11. low maintenance native and eatable landscape
12. landscape rocks (walls and paths) were obtain on-site and within 1 miles of building site.
13. Over 90% of lighting is fluorescent
14. Grided and finished cement floor adds thermal mass
and low maintenance
15. tight high quality Hurd windows

And..The Man hinted that he may be ready to build again...IF (that's a BIG IF) he should sell this amazing green-built masterpiece.....I have my  fingers crossed..how about you?

janeAnne-Sounds like quite a place. I like the locally sourced stone, native and edible plants and of course the southern exposure.

Why wouldn't he build again? His next masterpiece could be a green home that would embrace the best of old green tech. with the abundance of new green and greener technologies and options.

I hope you plant this seed in his head green-o-lina.

Pete~

It makes me smile to think of the way native resources were used in this home. As you say, " I like the locally sourced stone, native and edible plants and of course the southern exposure...."

Sabrina~

Wouldn't it be great if he would create another place? I wonder if each time you create a masterpiece the latest one becomes your favorite? What do you think?  I would like this artist-builder to build me a home. . .=)
