When I first started selling real estate the only thing I really knew about Berwyn was that it was part of a gag on The Svengooli TV show started by Jerry G. Bishop as the original Svengooli and since taken over by Rich Koz who started out as the Son of Svengooli until he was promoted to plain old Svengooli. I always thought that one of the Svengooli's was originally from Berwyn, therefore the gag, but I can't find why Berwyn was chosen. Anyway, the series has been on different channels, won awards, cancelled and can still be seen on WCIU TV Chicago.
Berwyn is a vibrant community that has a larger selection of single family residences vs. condo/townhomes. It is surrounded by Riverside, North Riverside, Stickney and Cicero and the Riverside shopping mall is close to the western portion of Berwyn.
Berwyn is popular because it's a little over 7 miles to downtown Chicago that you can get to by jumping on I-290, I-55 or taking the Metra Train from Berwyn's station. There is also local bus service.
Besides selling property in Berwyn, one of my favorite restaurants used to reside there but unfortunately they recently closed their doors. It was the Pilsner Restaurant that offered a wonderful selection of "bohemian" foods and received accolades from Chicago newspapers. I'll have to see if I can find them in case they opened up elsewhere. I found out the hard way by finding the Closed sign when we went to dine there one night. But Berwyn has many other restaurants in it's 3.9 square miles.
Edit: Since moving I no longer service the Berwyn area, but I can find a great local agent that does if you need a referral. You can search for Berwyn homes for sale by clicking the link.
