Berwyn Offers Much More than Being Svengooli's Home Town

Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Realty Group

When I first started selling real estate the only thing I really knew about Berwyn was that it was part of a gag on The Svengooli TV show started by Jerry G. Bishop as the original Svengooli and since taken over by Rich Koz who started out as the Son of Svengooli until he was promoted to plain old Svengooli.  I always thought that one of the Svengooli's was originally from Berwyn, therefore the gag, but I can't find why Berwyn was chosen.  Anyway, the series has been on different channels, won awards, cancelled and can still be seen on WCIU TV Chicago.

Berwyn is a vibrant community that has a larger selection of single family residences vs. condo/townhomes.  It is surrounded by Riverside, North Riverside, Stickney and Cicero and the Riverside shopping mall is close to the western portion of Berwyn.

Berwyn is popular because it's a little over 7 miles to downtown Chicago that you can get to by jumping on I-290, I-55 or taking the Metra Train from Berwyn's station.  There is also local bus service.

Besides selling property in Berwyn, one of my favorite restaurants used to reside there but unfortunately they recently closed their doors.  It was the Pilsner Restaurant that offered a wonderful selection of "bohemian" foods and received accolades from Chicago newspapers.  I'll have to see if I can find them in case they opened up elsewhere.  I found out the hard way by finding the Closed sign when we went to dine there one night.  But Berwyn has many other restaurants in it's 3.9 square miles.

Edit:  Since moving I no longer service the Berwyn area, but I can find a great local agent that does if you need a referral.  You can search for Berwyn homes for sale by clicking the link.

Jim, until I started selling properties in Berwyn I didn't take the town too seriously, either.  Once the "mystery" of Berwyn faded I don't always associate it with Svengoolie, although I can "hear" the gag as if I was just watching the program.

When I was a lad- my uncle bought his first home in Berwyn and it was by some yellow steel constructed factory. When we'd play wiffle ball in the yard it was always a challenge to try to scale the wall a'la the Green Monster at Boston's Fenway Park.......Congrats on being the first (and presumably only) to have svengooli in your tag cloud!

I grew up in the Berwyn area and still live around here.  Berwyn was always a residential community - not industrial like its neighbor Cicero.  It still has wonderful homes and everyone loves Proska Park.  It has the healty business district around MacNeal Hospital and also the Cermak shopping area- ending with Cermak Plaza - which has to be around 50 years old or older.  The Walgreen that' replacing the "spindle" has been there since the beginning.

The Chicago style octagonal bungalows are wonderful and most have the original leaded glass windows.  I still love heading north to Oak Park vie Oak Park avenue to see the wonderful bungalows.

There are still a few of the bohemian restaurants in the area that serve the wonderful liver dupling soup.  There are some great Italian restaurants there - along with the wonderful Salerno's Pizza - which has been in Berwyn for 40 years that I know of.  I hear loads about Pierre's - a wonderful Mexican Bakery.  Of course everyone know's abut Ftizgerals's on Roosevelt for great music entertainment.

If you have't visited - think about it.  It has a lot to offer.

Thanks for replying, Mary.  It is a great town and please share the bohemian restaurants that still exist there as my heart broke when Pilsner shut down.

I grew up in Berwyn and still visit family there. Svens jokes are great but I do not think he has any connection to Berwyn. As far as restaurants, the Seneca on Cermak has been there forever and has great family style food
