First Shot - First Deer

My first deer

My oldest daughter and her father went out to Grandma's property to hunt.  Ashley got a nice scope put on her gun for her birthday and sighted it in a few weeks ago. She was dressed in a Blaze orange snowsuit that was way too big but would be warm, at my insistance. Arthur put her on a tree stump overlooking a  small field and then went down the road to another field. He got there and heard a shot. Back he went and saw this very nice  10 point buck and my daughter with a huge grin on her face.

The only thing that would have made her happier is if her husband could have seen it!  He is in the Army, but has been injured.  He will be released from the transitional care unit after a month in the hospital in Georgia and flown home tonight with a medical discharge. They will have meat to eat this winter!

Im sorry but I would never be proud of killing an innocent animal like that. For what>?? is she mounting the head over her bed? Should not be allowed to happen. Dont mean to offend anyone!

Fernando -They will be eating the meat, not mounting but using.  The hide will be scraped and tanned and made into something.  They are as you say innocent creatures but unless controlled they multiply quite well.  More get killed by cars than hunters here. Sometimes the people are killed in the accident.

I am not offended - hunting is not for everyone and I get that, I don't hunt.  However either they are controlled by hunting or the government just sends people out to kill and dispose of the carcasses, as they do in some situations. If not controlled they starve through our winters as there isn't enough forage in the snow for them all. Once the wolves, bobcats and mountain lions are thinned out - there are too many deer. It is a vicious cycle but part of wildlife management.

Kathleen...Congrats to your Daughter.  That looks something like the one I was after, but i never seen it.  The Tanning of the hide is something that everyone should try...gives an even greater appriciation for the magestic animal.

And I agree with your above comment...nicely stated!

Not politically correct but if there is a tourist season, why aren't we allowed to shoot them?

Congrats on the filling of the freezer especially in time for daughter's hubby to get home to enjoy a nice roast.  thank you for your families service and sacrifice to our country.  bless you  cheryl

My hubby and I were hiking today, and saw a HUGE home sitting at the top of a small mtn, across the valley from us.  He said it reminded him of a time he was working with a fellow who said, (paraphrased)  " I hate the fact that people ruin a perfectly good view by building something like that, and yet I would defend their right to do so".  Sort of like hunting.  I could never kill an animal myself, but I am no longer a vegertarian.  I couldn't skin an animal, or tan its hide, but when hunters kill for the purpose of meat and a hide, not just a trophy, I too, defend their rights.  Living in the west, perspectives change from 20 years ago when I was a city girl...

William - I think this was one of those that many hunters would like to get.  She will just have to cook the meat slower as it will be tougher.  Lots of stew and soups.

Cheryl - Hah, hah you are silly. His first meal home was venison stew - then spagetti as my house (his request).

Bless you, sister.
