God Bless America!  United We Stand!

I am sitting here at home today and I have not gone to work just yet.  I have been in a different state of mood and I am just remembering where I was 5 years ago today.  I wanted to share with you where I was and how I will never forget it.

It was a Tuesday morning and I went back to my college to pick up information on their Masters program and post grad information.  I first went into the downstairs cafe of the college and I picked up a breakfast sandwich and while I was waiting in line I noticed students were gathered and watching the television which usually had music videos on.  I paid for my breakfast and I sat down and watched the television.  I still remember watching the television while eating my sandwich and not knowing what was going on.  All of a sudden another plane hits and then it just felt like I was watching a movie "fictional" because who would ever fly a plane into a building?  The first building was not caught on tape while a plane crashed into it so people were confused as to what was really going on in NY.  Now that I saw the 2nd plane go into the WTC I was shocked and it looked so fake.  Very confused and shocked, I proceeded to the Alumni Office and I had an appointment with one of the continuing education officials.  I remember knocking on his door and he opened the door with a scared/worried face.  He had a tv behind him and I sat in a chair to meet with him.  He told me that it is a pleasure to have me here but that he is very scared because of the events this morning.  He then told me that one of the WTC towers just fell a minute ago and I was like what?  So we spoke briefly and looked at the tv even more.  We couldn't really have a conversation as we would both like to and while we were looking at the television, the 2nd tower came down.  We were both confused and shocked.  We then heard about the other possible car bombs, hijackings and pentagon.  We both decided that we should meet again as this was not a time to meet.  I then realized that we were under attack and this is for real.  I then ran to my car and started driving to my parents house.  All I could think of was my family and to be with them as if it was the last wish that I had.  During the 40 minutes drive home while listening to the radio, I can't tell you the thoughts I had.  A person who had been recently laid off due to the DOT COM era and then this happening was just too much too handle.  Then I began to think about the people I know in NY and the family members that work at WTC.  I remember getting home and hugging my mom and calling my father in Stamford.  He came home early that day and we were all in shock.  Glued to the television sets and forgetting about our regular activities.  I was already depressed because I had lost my job since I was laid off along with 400 others and now with this horror I was even more depressed.

I learned that the family members that worked in the WTC made it out alive.  Learned that a girl that I had met through another girl during my times in college was on one of the planes that hit the WTC.  Learned that other friends that I had knew of family members that died that day in NY.

Life is short but sweet for certain.  A clear blue sky on a Tuesday morning where I tried to go back to school for a Masters degree turned into the ugliest day this nation has seen.

I will never forget 9-11-2001.  My thoughts are with all the families that lost someone on 9/11.
