The Sky is Dark and Eerie and I am afraid for my friends! How The So Cal Fires look from Fullerton

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential California Realty

The SkyToday started like any other but things changed when my friend Tina called me from Yorba Linda.  There was a big fire burning very near her!  I had no idea, from Fullerton, everything seemed ok....Until I went outside.

Not one but two big fires are burning in North Orange County.  We see it all the time on the news but this time it is right in my own back yard.  Homes in the neighborhoods that I have lived in and showed property are up in flames. Dozens of homes are on fire.  I am scared for some of my friends.

This isn't your rural fire.  This is suburbia.  Here are pictures from my house. I am about five miles from one fire and about 10 miles from another.  It has jumped over two from my front yardfreeways.

I had to take my son out on an errand and I could not believe the scores of people out and about at a park that is in the peak of Fullerton (Brea and Bastanchury).  They were taking pictures of the chaos.  You could see the flames as we drove.  There was so much traffic but not going away from the fire but heading right toward it.  Were people going to look at it or heading toward it to get their belongings?  The lanes leading away were empty.

When I got home, the news was reporting that people were actually heading towards the fires.  PLEASE people, make it easy for the firefighters; get out of the way.

From my back YardI know many of my friends in the Midwest have their tornadoes and to the South it is hurricanes.  Well here in So Cal, we have Santa Anas that kick up dry hot wind.  Since we live in the desert, this is a deadly disaster.  October is usually the month we worry but we are much later this year.

The fire department is doing the best they can but can not protect all the homes.  I can't believe it but I am pretty sure that I saw my friend's home on the news.  She lives in the beautiful hills of Yorba Linda and it was fully engulfed. I am saying prayers and hoping that everyone gets out safely.  The fire is heading towards Placentia. It is so hard to just sit here and be helpless.  I have so many friends in Placentia.  I use to live there. This is the closest I can ever remember one of these fires being.

Hi Cristal!
My son was trying to get to work today from our home in Sacramento...he works in Torrance at Islands Restaurant.  He got as far as Magic Mountain when I-5 was closed due to the fires. They detoured him to 126, where he drove for several hours before they turned them around and sent them back to I-5.  He left here at 8:30 this morning and should have been in Torrance by 2:30 at the latest.  Because of the detour he was late and so went directly to work and got there at 7:30PM...2 and a half hours late for work and 5 hours later than he would have normally been. I know his inconvenience was minor compared to all of the people who lost everything - I just thought about it when I read your blog.  I hope you are OK. Keep us posted!

Cristal, Let's hope that the winds that blow no one any good change direction and the fire will implode in upon itself. Is there a cause for the fire? I hope that it was not arson or some careless person thumping a cigarette out the window...

Hey Cristal, I am so tired from stressing out yesterday. My heart goes out to everyone that has been effected by the fire. For me it was just a lot of smoke and ashes. I am very lucky to only have to endure so little in comparison.

I have been thinking about you off and on all day. Hope to hear a hello from you soon. Take care of your family and run if you have to. Don't wait until the last minute to decide. I know it is difficult to figure out what to do in this type of situation because so much depends upon the wind and so many other variables... Wishing you a peaceful and calm day. <3 C.

Hi All,

Tina, I was thinking about you and am glad it is moving on.

I woke up at 5:00 and the sky was an orange glow and it was scary but by 10:00 to sky was pretty blue.  It sounds like th fires have merged and are moving north.

C- We are clear here in Fullerton so please do not worry. I have many friends in YL and one lost her house, scores of others have evactuated. I did like you and told one to leave!  It was not worth it.

This is the scariest thing I have seen.  But just so you all know, we are ok in Fullerton.  Thanks for the well wishes!

Hi Cristal,

I'm sorry to hear about your friends' homes, but thank God they are okay. And I'm glad to hear you're okay.

I'm on the other side of the fire, in the Orange Hills/Villa Park area, and we were fine here too. But the bright orange glow from the flames last night was amazing. And this is about the 3rd big fire in that same general area in the last couple of years.

Yesterday, I had to go to a Walmart near the 55 and 91 fwys, and the smoke was getting pretty bad. It made my eyes burn just walking across the parking lot. And even the Walmart greeter at the door was wearing one of those filter masks, just so he could breathe.

Again, glad to hear your friends are okay.

Cristal-

Wow, those are some photos!

My husband being a Fire Fighter would appreciate people NOT going back to their house to save their belongings, pets, etc.  the most important thing to save is your life or your family's by NOT driving towards the area.

I'm praying for you and yours.

Michael, I heard you could see black smoke everywhere...even in space!

Thanks kristin!

Sheila - I know you hear it all the time.  It think it was a lot of lookie loos.

At last report, it looks like they are getting it under control.  Three families in total from my son's school have lost their homes as of this morning.  It could be much worse.

Thanks again!

Hi Cristal,

I just heard on the radio that over 800 homes have been lost so far. And then I found this article sayingthe same thing. These people are all going to need a lot of support and prayers from everyone.

Cristal, I hope they can gain control of this thing soon. It's sad to hear about all the people that have lost their homes. Be careful out there.

Hi Cristal!
Just coming back to you today...I just keep hearing of more fires and more damage.  Thank Goodness that the trailer park ended up with no deaths!  How are your lungs surviving?

Cristal - Those are absolutely amazing pictures of a tragic event.  I have friends in the area of the Santa Barbara and Temecula fires.  Their homes are fine, but the smoke is hard to deal with.

Wayne, your mom lives at Morning side?  That is right around the corner from me.  It was pretty eerie over here!  All was well in Fullerton though.

Actually my Grandmother and her sister live there.  Beautiful place and they love it.  They say things are getting better..  My Grandmother is traveling right now so I would say she picked a good time.

Too bad I didnt know you when she sold her home a few years ago... Or maybe you sold it? Hummm :)
