Fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains

By

As an avid hiker and explorer of Shenandoah National Park-Skyline Drive, I recently availed myself of a hike in Whiteoak Canyon to the lower Whiteoak Falls. During a family get-together at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria Virginia, I was pleasantly surprised to find several nearby trails leading into the park. This year my Family and I hiked the 4 ½ mile Lower Falls part of the Whiteoak Canyon, from the Park Boundary in Madison County off Weakley Hollow Rd. to the lower falls and back. It was a somewhat strenuous and steep hike, but well worth it for the fall colors in their splendor. The spectacular view of the falls was made even more beautiful as the sun dipped behind the ridgeline of the Canyon. Skyline Drive is particularly congested in the fall as many people enjoy viewing the beautiful fall colors along this stretch of the Blue Ridge. Myself I prefer to find more off the beaten path parts of the park. Below are several images from this hike, I hope you all enjoy and take the time to explore this most beautiful National Park for yourself.

Bryant, as always beautiful pictures.  I especially like the third picture.  I love the way the water looks.

We don't have much of a fall here in Spring so I enjoy seeing the fall pictures.  Our leaves just turn brown and will fall sometime in December.  The good news is that they are back on by March.

Marchel-

Thank you so much for all the kind words about my artwork, I do truly appreciate it. Fall here is my favorite time of year, it used to be the only time I shot color film, and would concentrate on B&W film the rest of the year. Take care and have a great day!

Bryant, Your photos are always so wonderful.  I love the red/burgandy leaf.  Now I feel a need to take a walk in the woods.

Just beautiful.  My favorite is the first waterfall photo.  I get some really pretty fall colors here in Georgia, but our waters is sort of the color of mud.

Bob-

Thank you for the kind words, the image of the leaf is a photoshop creation, I isolated the leaf from the rock beneath, then I removed all the color from the image except the leaf to make it stand out more in the B&W image.

Thank you for the compliment, it was a beautiful day that day and I managed to capture the reflection of the blue sky in several of the waterfall, stream images.

Love the pictures. I like the way the first picture makes you wonder where it is going and what adventure could be down the path.

OK Bryant,  I have the third and fourth photos also, but they were taken during the spring.  We were in TN visiting a friend when we took a trip through the Blue Ridge Mts. on the way to Franklin, TN.

My wife and I plan several trips to Skyline Dr and Shenandoah National Park every year. We both love the serenity and beauty of the area, I also enjoy researching the history of the area's inhabitants prior to the park's foundation. Coming from a history background this has always interested me.

The images you have in the spring are probably more dramatic as the snow run off really swells the creeks and are impressive!
