My recent terrorizing experience. A serious warning about a popular OTC medication.

For those who "know" me, you know that it has been ages since I have been active on AR. The reason is I have been seriously ill since the end of Sept.

Sept. the 29th I had what was thought to be a stroke. ( I'm only 38). I have been witness to several with my elder family members over the years and in my former position at a local hospital. Even my daughter was saying " Mom, are you stroking out on me?" while this was happening. The ER doc's and one of my family docs same to the same conclusion...classic stroke.

The next 6 weeks were a nightmare. I spent almost every waking minute feeling VERY drugged. ( Dizzy, disoriented, headaches, muscle spasms and twitches, racing heart rate, shaking, slurred speech) I fell down like 10-12 times, using a phone sometimes almost made me pass out, and I did black out a few times too.  I couldn't drive, use a computer, sleep...I basically could not function as a human in any way. Several times I thought I would honestly die- I was SO SICK.

A neurologist diagnosed me as having Hemi-Plegic Migraines, a family doc- as a sinus infection, another as stress and anxiety, an ENT as fluid in my inner ear and infection in my middle ear, and a chiropractor said my C1 was tilted and could be pinching a nerve. True Misery, ok.

Anyway, 6 weeks and 16-18k dollars later (yes 16,000-18,000) I found the culprit. A VERY POPULAR over the counter Diet Aid- Orlistat, a fat blocker. It is marketed under several names. One is over the counter, and the rest are perscription only.

I had finally started to feel "normal" last week. I had gone back to work, was driving again, everything. I had been on so many meds in the last weeks that I had stopped taking the Orlistat. ( losing weight was the last thing on my mind) I had asked literally EVERY doctor that I saw if it could have caused this and they all agreed NOT. "Just cause gastro symptoms" was their answer

Hmmmm, I stared back on it Tuesday evening and by Friday afternoon, BAM! It all came rushing back. I looked into it further, under all the perscription names and the actual drug name, and HOLY COW! This drug causes all of these symptoms and more- even the ear infections. Stopped taking it then and today- I'm almost 100% again.

There have been others who have been through and experience like mine too, BUT the FDA didn't require them to list these side effects (and many others) on their product. (They only listed the one's having to do with gastrointestinal side effects.) The fact that 30% of people taking this drug had severe headaches didn't warrant a disclosure according to FDA guidelines I guess.(Or that 99 cases of pancreatitis have been reported to the FDA from those on this drug in the first couple of years it was made avail.)

So, if you, or anyone you know is thinking of taking this stuff, just read up on it and know what to look for. There are some even more serious side effects than what happened to me.

I just had to warn as many people as I could about this *potentially awful product.

*It works well for some without bad side effects

Toni, I read every word of your post -- that is terrifying.  My son, who lives with me, is bipolar and on many medications.  We watch carefully for side effects.  Scares me to death what he has to put into his body.

Been to Easley.  Stayed with the parents of a co-worker several years ago.  I love your area.

Wow!  That's terrible. I bought the Alli once, my husband was upset, didn't want me to try anything that might cause side effects that are unknown just to loose a few pounds. I guess he was right!

So glad you're feeling better. Isn't there someone--- maybe the news media- that can get the word out?

Hi Toni.  I'm so sorry to hear that you went through this.  As a former personal trainer and still an avowed fitness fanatic, I steer people clear of any dietary weight loss/fat burner products.  In my opinion they're all dangerous.  Plus, they're only masking the fact that the only tried and true safe methods to losing weight are exercise and and a sensible diet.  It angers me that these products are allowed to advertised on T.V. and in magazines.  They are nothing more than legalized speed.  Please don't ever take ANYTHING like that again.  If you need fitness and nutritional advice please feel free to contact me anytime.

What an awful experience Toni, thank God you were able to pinpoint what was causing the problem, how scary!  I cannot believe the FDA would pass the drug...have you contacted the company to let them know about this??

Annette, I love my little Easley area too. Give me a shout if you ever return here. I'd love to meet some of my active rainers!

Linda- Maybe you should listen to him. (I didn't even mention that one of the meds the Neurologist put me on during this time made me have a sezuire.) If I had never taken the Orlistat, I'd never would have taken the migraine preventative that caused it.

Robert- Really! I was afraid I had something like MS. I've never been so scared.

Patrick, Seems many have contacted the FDA about similar serious side effects but they just don't care. It has been suggested that the manufacturer was given clearance on this drug, to help compensate them for a HUGE lose over another "bad" drug. Apparently they were sued in a class action suit and were nearing a finacial crisis. I can't tell you eveything I have learned about the entity that is supposed to be watching out for us this last few days. (FDA) but it's mind blowing how they circumnavigate around issues to "help" these drug companies out.

I'll never fill a perscription or purchase an OTC drug without checking it out closely again.

Jerry, I have known better than to take the fat burners and appitite suppressors for a long time. This one just seemed so harmeless though. Just blocking some of the fat from being absorbed sounded like no biggie. Good advice, thanks.

Wow, Toni, you have been through a lot. I am glad you found the answer, so many may have not and are living a horrible life. I steer clear of all the "magic" pills. Hard to believe our govt permits these products without study. FYI, on Sundays, our local radio is nothing but infomercials from people that try to sound like experts but are doing nothing but ripping us off and maybe far worse, like in your case. God bless and keep you!

Good grief Toni,  Well we are all glad you are better now.  Thanks for the heads up to.  It is amazing that the FDA did not make them list all the side effects and that the Doctors did not pick up on this.

Larry, I will make a point to send a FULL list of side effects of this drug to each doctor and hospital that I have been to. It really concerns me that I was assured by them all that I could continue the medication and it was not be responsible for my illness. I think maybe doctors should have to do continuing ed to be kept abreast on new drugs every year or so. They need to KNOW what they're taking about. What do you all think?

Wow I am glad you figured it out before it's too late. No miracles come in a pill when it comes to that stuff. Also if you are on BC pills they can cause a gross inflation of Cholestoral and one of the primary reasons doctors are finding that young women are having heart attacks. Give it 5 more years and they will tell you BC are bad for you. I am well within my weight for my height, eat very healthy, most stuff is shipped from my grandmothers garden. My cholestoral and my moms was over range. We went off BC pills and it dropped over 200 points within a month. Everyone needs to do their own research and not count on doctors. We know our own bodies.

I do believe that any of those otc diet aids can do more bad than good.  Glad you are better.

Geez Toni, I thought my week was bad enough. It looks like you have had a tough time also.

I am glad you were able to figure out the problem.  It is ridiculous some of the stuff that goes onto the market with the side effects they have.  Listening to the commercials on TV it almost sounds like the side effects of some of these OTC drugs are harsher than the problem it was supposed to cure.

Good luck getting your dog trained not to run out in the road.  If I was to adopt a dog like that now, my 44 year old body would feel like a 94 year old in no time.  I think I will stick with a 4+ year old dog that likes the couch. 8>)

Thanks for the nice comments.

Wow!  I can't imagine going through all that, and how upset I would be that it was for nothing.  Ty Carey (my partner in Dreamfinders) works with a personal trainer very near you that has him strictly on diet and exercise, and vitamin type supplements, and you wouldn't believe the change in him.  He's dropped 58 lbs since August, and is still dropping.  Greg keeps it changing enough that he's never plateaued so far...  Let us know if you're interested in his number!  I plan to sign up after the holiday goodies. ;)
