Jacksonville, Fl area goes Nuclear! Well sorta!

It was announced today by Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter that one of the nuclear carriers in the Atlantic fleet will be moving to the Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Florida.  This was great news for the Northeast Florida/Southeast Georgia area.

This will mean thousands of new jobs for the area as well as a boon to the real estate market.  These Navy men women not only will need homes and apartments but the local economy will get a nice boast.  The carrier yet to be named has an on board crew of over three thousand.

St. Marys, GA where I live has a Navy Sub Base and is only about 30 miles up the road from Mayport.

Wayne, I was wondering when we would get a new ship after the Kennedy was retired. I think they will need to dredge the the waters to Mayport. I don't think it is deep enough for these newer ships.

Robert you are right on there.  They say it will take up to five years to prepare the port for that big carrier.  Robert what do you think it will do for the housing market in the area?

They are saying it could take up to five years.  It all depends how quickly the port can be made ready to receive the carrier.

Wayne - That should be great for the housing market in our area. NAS Brunswick, Maine is shutting down and it should be complete by Aug. 2009. Most of the enlisted from NAS Brunswick has move to our area.  We also have our port that has been making alot of deals lately with businesses moving in the area. Things are looking good for Jacksonville.
