Columbus Georgia, Muscogee County and the surrounding counties are set to reap the benefits of Fort Benning's growth and expansion. Fort Benning is at the center of Georgia's largest public sector economic development project. The worlds best Infantry Center will also become the next home of the Armor School. The school is presently based at Fort Knox Ky. and in approximately two years the initial movement to Fort Benning will begin. That is going to be a military population increase of 5,500 active duty troops; 2,000 civilians and another 3,000 contractors are expected to accompany the troop movement. Political leaders, civic leaders, developers and builders are working around the clock to satisfy the projected needs of the 11,000 military, civilian and dependents that will call Columbus and Fort Benning their new home.
Columbus is also at the center of the largest private sector expansion project in Georgia. AFLAC has announced a plan to increase office space by 90,000 sq ft and an addition of 2,000 employees. In recent years AFLAC has created 340,000 sq ft of office space in Coporate Ridge, in addition to the original Headquarters located on Wynnton Road.
