Downtown Chandler is Hosting 'Home for the Holidays' starting Nov. 22.

     The city of Chandler is hosting a series of festivities called "Home for the Holidays".  The first of the series will be on Sat. Nov. 22.  Activities will include skating, crafts and cookie decorating. The day will begin with a singing performance by Dickens Carolers at 1 p.m. and Santa will be on site from 4 to 6 p.m.

      The day's main attraction is a synthetic outdoor skating rink in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park from 1 to 9 p.m. Visitors will first want to stop by the skating rink to get free tickets for an assigned skate time. Skates will be provided for all participants. Skating is free  to participants however, they you are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation.

      Downtown merchants craft activities include "Making Holiday Bows" by Phoenix Flower Shop, "Making Multi-Culture Mosaics with Paper and Tile" by Artistic View, "Making Holiday Ornaments" by both Mind Over Splatter and the Vision Gallery and "Making Postcards, Ornaments and More" by Art On Boston. In Pockets presents the holiday sugar cookie decorating. All of these make-and-take activities request a nonperishable food donation.

     On  Saturday November 29th the second 'Home for the Holidays' event will include a visit by Santa from 3 to 5 and a double-feature movie in the park. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park and relax under the stars for a showing of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" staring Jim Carrey at 5 p.m., followed by the Jimmy Stewart classic, "It's a Wonderful Life.".

     The third and biggest 'Home for the Holidays' event takes place from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 6 with the 19th annual Parade of Lights and the 52nd annual Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony.  Festivities include music,  food and beverage vendors, arts and crafts, and  family fun. Next to the Tumbleweed Tree is Santa's House where  children can get their picture taken with Santa.

     The annual Parade of Lights begins at 7 p.m., featuring families, local school groups, marching bands, civic and neighborhood organizations, churches, dance troupes and businesses - all decorated to light up the night.

 The parade route passes through the historic downtown. It begins at the corner of Arizona Avenue and Chicago Street, and passes by Dr. A.J. Chandler Park.  The parade  will end at the corner of Boston Street and Arizona Place.

Immediately following the Parade of Lights, Mayor Boyd W. Dunn and members of the City Council greet Santa and flip the power switch to light up the Tumbleweed Tree.
