I Am Awestruck by the Activerain COMMUNITY!

Many of us are "addicted" to this site-and can't quite figure out WHY.  We all sometimes let things slide....the wash can wait, the dishes will still be there as we sit and blog and comment for hours on end, often times until we are bleary eyed.

Years ago when I got my very first computer it came with 10 free hours of Prodigy.  I didn't know what Prodigy WAS--I only knew that I had one month to use it.  My friend who came to set up my computer asked me what my "Screen" name should be.

I didn't have a CLUE what he was talking about!  At the time I loved to fly (how things have changed : ) and came up with the name "flybyme."  What did I know?  Just before my month was up, I signed in to Prodigy and stumbled around-and found message boards.

I was shocked.  People were speaking from the heart on all times of issues they were going through with others coming back to post their thoughts and cheer them on or give them some useful advice.  It kept saying "LIVE CHAT" was coming but I had no idea what that was.  Until it came-AND CHANGED MY LIFE.

I found myself one day in "The New York Room."  In a day long before pictures were on the Internet, we signed on every evening at 9pm from all over New York. We chatted-and we made friends.  Real, TRUE friendships with many of them lasting to this day

My name was eventually shortened to FLY.  One day someone suggested we all meet; there were about 70 people that came into the room by then. This person suggested that he could rent out a place on Long Island for $50 per person-and if we wished to go we should send in our money...made out to him.

Many were skeptical.  I had just made a new friend from that site who was married, had children close in age to my own and lived in the next town.  We decided to meet one day at a diner-and had so many things in common.  We are still friends to this day!

LadyrosLI from Prodigy

Not knowing what to expect, we sent in our money and when we arrived we had name tags. We HAD NO IDEA WHAT ANYONE LOOKED LIKE AND WE DIDN'T CARE-WE ALREADY KNEW THEM from our "chats."  For several years we had regular parties with new people joining and I went to them ALL.

I thought I had lost those days forever when Prodigy became a business site.  Most of us lost touch-some of us stayed in contact but our party days were gone.  I thought I would never find an online site like that again.  One that people literally became true friends on.

Prodigy Members

It is many years since Prodigy is gone but Activerain is just a larger version.  While the internet has evolved, we are still PEOPLE--and this incredible place provides friendships; real, TRUE friendships.  If you wonder why you're so addicted to Activerain, it's not just BUSINESSIt is the wonderful community that was established by some incredible people.  I am SO grateful for Activerain which still allows me to be myself-and allows real friendships to form.

*This post is dedicated to my very first friend from Prodigy who is facing some health issues. She is the most postive person I know.   Be well, Sue.  I know this community will join in my prayers for you because they truly CARE.

Kathy, The friends you will make here are going to be priceless--I promise.

Elizabeth, Many of us have gotten miracles from here--a multitude of blessings are sent by such wonderful people.  GBU!

Bobby, What a nice thing to say...thank you so much for your prayers.

Joan, It was the very first site I was on...quickly followed by AOL.  True friendships I never made on AOL but Prodigy--was just a special place like here.

Colleen, Thank you.  This is a wonderful place and I do believe the addiction part is because of friendships.

Maria, Thank you for your prayers for Sue.  There are very special people on here, thank you for being one of them.

Mary, I signed onto AOL not long after Prodigy but it was the original site I was hooked on.  The friendships--we all liked and cared about each other.  Another 10 years?  Goodness, I'm just concentrating on learning what I can THIS year :)

Trunda, I am laughing because I only got the computer because I figured my kids would need it--I never thought I'd learn a thing about them.  I still know very little but get by--and that's fine with me.

Alexsandra, I know exactly how you feel.  Several people I care about very much have ledr but I stay subscribed and hopeful that they will come back one day.  I miss them very much, though.

Chuck, It really was pure magic.  We didn't know each other's ages, race, religion and it didn't matter a bit.  We were FRIENDS.  Some are on AOL but most I've lost touch with, sadly.

Marcela, Thank you--She has an incredible spirit, I am sure with all these blessings she will be fine.

Joel, I haven't Twittered.  I hardly have time and don't want another addiction!   This place is just wonderful and I can never get back to all the people I'd like to.

Marti, Thank you so much!  I never expected, either, the type of friendships I've made here and feel SO fortunate to have found this place.

Grace, I love these "magic" stories!  You just never know who's online and reading.  It proves to me what I've always believed--You meet the people in life you are supposed to meet!

Morgan, It starts off as business and many of us do blog for business as well.  But there's something also very personal about AR where you'll find some of the BEST friendships in the world.

How did I miss this blog Carole?  First, all my positive thoughts and energy are going out to your friend.  Second, I was jus thinking about this very thing today.  We all crave belonging and friendships.  I had no idea that I would be joining a "family" when I joined Active rain!

Laurie, Thank you--I haven't seen you much in the rain and am sure you're busy but I've been thinking of you.

Kate, Thank you.  Sue has a while to go but also has an incredible spirit.  With this amount of prayers and blessings I'm sure she will be fine.

Missy, I see you all over and never know how you manage to keep up!  Thank you so much for your wishes and I hope you are well.

Tiffany, I was on so long ago, they didn't specify rooms--it was when "chat" first went live.   How much fun that was :)

Cristal, Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers for Sue.  I didn't know myself when I joined AR that I would make REAL friendships---what an amazement to me too.

Annie, I was much younger but I had so much fun with those wonderful people!  We did all kinds of things together and it was a really fun time.

Carole--I have seen the good and the bad come from online relationships and friendships. Obviously you found the good and now it seems that more and more people realize the power of these friendships. I have a friend from when I was 13. We were penpals and she lives in South Africa. The only difference with the internet is that it doesn't take weeks to receive a reply. It is instant and the friendships can be just as real. I hope your friend gets better soon.

Hi Carole- I remember too when the Internet really started, but unlike you I wouldn't go into any of the Chat Rooms LOL :).....I only came to AR because my competitor came here, and I sure wasn't going to let someone else claim my farm area :)  But look what happened....I have a friend in Long Island that I just love to talk to :)

I will absolutely keep your friend in my thoughts.

Teri, I loved those days and had so much fun.  We were such an unlikely "group" of people---and it didn't matter a bit.  Just like Activerain we are all connected.

Kevin & Monica, Wow, has the internet changed!  I can't keep up--and don't even try :)  And never thought it would be a source of business (who knew?).

Kathy, I came here for business as well--and didn't have a CLUE about the friendships for a while.  To me these days the friendships are what really make us addicted--and I might be coming to San Diego in March.  Be warned :)

I think the 80/20 rule is appropriate here:

  • 80% of Active Rainers are addicted because of points
  • 20% of Active Rainers lie about not being addicted to points

LOL.
