I find that there are two types of people that we encounter daily, those that pull you to a halt, and those that push you forward." For the most part, it's the Pullers who seek to align themselves with you out of their own selfish motives. In fact, it could be said that we are all being pulled on daily by someone. However, if you are enamored by Pullers, and being constantly pulled, inevitably, you will end up running in place!
Pullers will rob you of your time, with wasteful chatter and needy demands, while Pushers will propel you forward. The challenge we face, is to surround ourselves with people who will push us forward, while controlling those who seek to pull us. You should avoid allowing others to control your time wastefully, and thus limiting your progress. Keep in mind, that the job of an adviser is to advise you, but it is your responsibility to make the decisions, and to take action.
Avoid being pulled to a grinding halt. Your goal should be to assemble a strong team of professionals around you, each of whom demonstrates their ability to perform, but are not seeking to take the steering wheel. Remember, you are the quarterback, who calls the plays and sets the pace for the offense. Just like the running backs run the ball, and the wide receivers catch the passes that you throw, your team pushes the ball toward the goal. To win the game, you must control the ball. My closing analogy is as follows: Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer and Golf, all have one thing in common. "In each sport, the team or player who controls the ball, wins the game!"
To your success,
Jimmy D. Williams
