Popcorn Balls

I love to make these!  I have made them every year for Halloween since I was 18!

Step 1.  Pop 2 qts. popcorn - air-popped is best - and put in a large pan.

I have also made this using 2 bags of microwave popcorn.

Step 2.  Put sugar, corn syrup, butter, 1/3 cup water and salt in a medium saucepan.

Step 3.  Place pan over medium heat and stir constantly until mixture comes to a boil.

Step 4.  Stop stirring and let syrup cook until it reaches 270 degrees F on a candy thermometer.  on until it is stringy when testing in a glass or bowl of cold water.

Step 5.  Remove pan from heat.

Step 6.  Take popcorn out of oven and pour hot syrup over popcorn a little at a time, stirring constantly, until all popcorn is coated.

Step 7.  Let popcorn cool slightly, until you can handle it easily.

Step 8.  Grease your hands with butter and form popcorn into balls.

Step 9.  Eat your popcorn, the leftovers can be wrpped in plastic and stored for later!

Marci -- these remind me of growing up and having them every year about this time .... our neighbor put tiny pieces of peppermint candies in them for Christmas and they were soooo good!  She also used green or red food coloring to give them a real holiday look.  Thanks for the recipe!

Maureen!  Wow!  I never thought of using peppermint.  I like to add walnuts or almonds!  I may have to try the peppermint this year!  Thanks for the tip!
