Don't Let Your Participle Dangle...

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

Dangling participles are often funny. A good example of this is "Squished flat by Bubba's pick-up truck, Fluffy sniffed at what was left of the chicken finger." Well, lets hope that it was not Fluffy that was  squished flat by Bubba's truck. Anyway, this is a good example of a dangling participle.

But how about dangling lights? Many unhandy homeowners are often looking for a quick fix to dark basements and attics never thinking of the potential electrical hazards that exist by leaving the light fixture in this condition. Now how long would it have taken the installer to make this right during the installation process? Another 2 minutes to bond the ground wire and install 2 screws? Makes ya wonder what they were thinking...

Don't make the mistake that many new home owners do. All houses, new or old, need a complete home inspection by licensed professionals. Dangling doesn't worry me; however, swinging will get my attention... a la The Piano Player!

Michael - although I am still not sure about dangling participles, I am well converese in dangling electricals (fixtures that is). It amazes me, the things people do with electrical outlets and fixtures.

You can tell it was an amateur because he didn't match the color of the wire nuts. My gosh, how could someone be so sloppy in their work? :)

It is amazing how many times we see this stuff. That said, I think I have one myself in my basement workshop. I think there's something about cobbler's and their children's shoes........... Hmmmmm

Nice photo!

now even more than before - no one wants to spend the money to hire a pro so they are doing all kinds of things wrong. BUYERS ALWAYS NEED TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL HOME INSPECTOR, NOT BASED ON COST BUT BASED ON QUALITY OF THE INSPECTOR. SOUNDS LIKE YOUR COMPANY IS GREAT!!!

Michael, I used to do some work for a Realtor.  He added home inspections to his business for some time, but eventually went back to being a Realtor.  He told me that a lot of home inspectors were just after the quick buck and weren't being thorough in his opinion, as he was called in to go behind some of these guys who just never found anything.

Here's a blog topic you might consider...how can the consumer be sure they are choosing a good home inspector veses one who wants to get in and out of the house quickly to make more money?  Is there a way?  It's not easy to know the character of a person these days.

I was wondering about this recently because I was thinking about how I will choose a good home inspector the next time my wife and I decide to buy a house.  A referral doesn't necessarily mean someone in this business does great work, he may be great at missing little things that others just don't think about.

Yes, home inspections are very important.  In our area a lot of the homes are selling 'as is' and some buyers don't know why they should spend the money for the home inspection when it's not going to 'get them anything fixed.'  I have to try to keep my eyeballs from bugging out of my head as I calmy explain that a home inspection will be more valuable in an 'as is' house because then you will know what you need to fix and if the home is worth fixing to you (if a home inspection turns up something major).  Not all buyers are this tight with their money they don't realize the value of a good home inspection but I try to educate the ones who think they are saving money by not getting one.

I totally agree with Jenn.  I list bank properties and when someone wants to make an offer, I always suggest an inspection, and, of course, I always suggest two or three, but I make it clear that one of them that I recommend takes at least three hours to go through the home and sends a manual of issues and suggested corrections to them at the end for their own peace of mind.

And, Richard, I think I need to hire him for my house, too.  Yikes!

It matters to us as much as it matters to you.

I hope you or John can schedule my clients for Tuesday.  I am on my way to the basement to check our my "participles", my daughter the English would be pleased with the grammatical reference.

Thanks for all the help and advise in Larry's blogging class.  You two are making it fun for us.

Hi Michael,

Hard to believe that someone wouldn't have taken the time to install two screws and close the fixture. That is basic. Wonder what the major's yielded?
