Dogs going crazy for no reason

By
Home Inspector with Clayton Inspection Service, Inc.

Last night my dogs were going crazy in the dining room. They were barking and jumping around, and pretty much acting like a couple of 13 year old boys that have spent the day drinking Red Bull, eating candy, and well, being 13. They were out of control.

They usually act that way (well, not THAT bizarre) when there is a squirrel in the bird feeder. I knew it couldn't be a squirrel since I took the bird feeder down for some repairs.

So I grabbed my flashlight and went out back to see what was causing them to be so hyper. Here's what I found in a shrub that is right next tothe dining room window. I guess I need to listen to the girls more often.

Here are the girls on squirrel patrol from their "post"

Jack, what great pictures! I'm glad you found the offender and not the patrol.

Our "boys" patrol for squirrels and rabbits and sometimes the occasional kid on a bike :-)

What is that?  A possum?  I hope you didn't let the dogs out to kill it!

So cute!  I love possums, and I love dogs.  You should always listen to the girls.

No, I didn't let the girls out. The little possum just hissed at me when I took it's photo. It didn't like the flash, and scurried away. Long gone in the morning. Just glad it wasn't a skunk.

We have a lot of possoms in our area of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. They are scary looking. I have found several in the bottom of my trash can trying to get back out.

Maureen,

I used to live in Long Beach and we had a lot of possums there too.

My Standard Schnauzers have caught several possums like yours. You need to learn to trust the girls. They have much keener hearing and noses than we do. Mine have never kicked up a fuss over nothing. There was always something or somebody that I did not see. Thanks for the photos! Those girls deserve a bone!!

;)
