Odd stuff we see inspecting houses

By
Home Inspector with Clayton Inspection Service, Inc.

When I started inspecting homes, I would sometimes spend time looking at cool built in bookcases, or interesting cabinets, or odd furniture.

After a while, it took something out of the ordinary to catch my attention. I mean, just how many Frank Lloyd Wright style stained glass windows do you need to see before you lose interest.

Now, it takes something really strange or out of place to even make a blip on my radar. The following photo is an example of something that did catch my attention. This was in a very nice lake house. Not a mega-mansion, just a very nice, fairly large house. This was in a basement family room.

In case you can't tell, it's a fireplace inside the lion's mouth

wow that's bizarre - never seen anything like that before!  If it's made of wood, wouldn't that be a fire hazard?

It was plaster or some sort of cement product. Yes, very strange.
