Black Friday adoption specials at Oregon Humane Society

By
Real Estate Appraiser with Estimation Nation Corporation

It's puppy season and this means a higher dog populous at your local shelter. To assist in remedying the lack of kennel space, the Oregon Humane Society is offering a ‘Black Friday Special'.... On Black Friday (November 28th) the shelter is adopting out any animal with a majority of black in it's coloring for half the adoption fee.

Unfortunately shelters across the country experience a smaller adoption rate for animals that are primarily black over animals with multi or lighter solid colorings. You can see by looking at OHS's first page of adoptable dogs.  Fourteen out of twenty dogs on this page have a majority of black coloring (and I'm not even counting ‘Berta' the dog they used for the ‘Black Friday Special' article)

Dogs are not the only animals with the color stigma. Black cats have known years of being affiliated with evil omens, bad luck or witches and broomsticks the superstitious and religious sort.   Sadly even my own family feels it necessary to take precautions around Halloween and keep our incredibly cool black cat, Jazzy indoors.

So whether you're currently looking for a new companion, or plan to in the future, please go visit your local shelter first and don't overlook an animal based on size, age or color.

11/29/2008 Update:

OHS found new homes for 60 dogs, cats and small animals on Black Friday.  Of course, there are still plenty of animals at the shelter, but this helps as a busy Saturday might see 30 adoptions.

Sara- We adopted one this year, this past spring, then over the summer a black lab adopted us.  Just showed up at my office to be our newest member of the family.  Pets are wonderful and this is a great project since those get adopted less.  I hope it works for the animals sakes.

Hi Robert - I had no idea of the statistics either until I started volunteering at OHS years ago.

Jubal - Yes it is ;-)

Hi Chris and Maria - We always end up with the pets that had nowhere else to go... it's amazing how you can even love them for their quirks and flaws, aye?

Patty - Thanks!  The more people that can spread the word, the better!  And even if you have friends that don't want to make the jont to Portland, the Clark County animal shelter has a much smaller capicity and could use the help during puppy season, too!

Hello Tammy - Isn't that funny how animals know where to find us suckers that will take them in?   :-)

Thanks all for stopping by!  It's great to see this many animal lovers out there.

I have mostly white animals right now (poodle and shi-tzu) but black labs are always the greatest companions. Black is beautiful!

WHAT?? That's crazy! I have an all black cat and he was the pick of the litter! He's gorgeous and I wouldn't trade him for an expense account at Godiva :)

I'm perplexed as to how this statistic ever came to be.

Hopefully the Black Friday event goes well and many of our four legged friends find new humans to train! That statistic is surprising. But now that I think about it, I have had many dogs and cats, only 2 of which were black. A standard poodle, Andy and a cat Leah. There must be something to that. Best of luck on Friday!

I think that's a wonderful idea. The black pets statistic is unbelieveable but very sadly true. It is so prevelant that it has a name "black dog syndrome".

It's pretty hard to believe that people won't  adopt a dog or cat because of its color.  Oh well, that's life.  At least the The Oregon Humane Society is doing a great deed to help the pets to get adopted.

"During the annual OHS Black Friday adoption campaign, we're offering a 50% discount on any black or predominantly black pet. This includes dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents and any other animal at the shelter"  Hopefully this will help them find a new loving home.  I have a Pit Bull Mastiff mix, there is no way I can see him in an animal shelter.

Nice Blog!

Hi Anne Marie

My Christmas wish this year includes increasing the number of toys I donate to children and the number of families that I donate holiday meals to.

Good luck and success

We have had black furred animals and they are the best-- they were as loving and sweet as any other color.

Great idea.  My dog is not black but she is the apple of my eye. I found her when she was a puppy almost 14 years ago.  She was starving and laying on the side of the road.  I love when people rescue animals and take care of them.  She has been spoiled to death for almost fourteen years now.

Thank You,

Nate Rowe(Homes in Richmond)

How odd.  I would never had thought that a black dog would have a harder time being adopted.  I've only owned two dogs in my life and they were both black with brown "eyebrows."   My son owns one black cat and my daugher owns two black and white cats.  Guess we must just be color blind!

Two of my shelter cats are mostly black. Tuxedos we call them. My other stray is all white. Interestingly though, He "Robert" was the last of his litter to be adopted. I was told his tabby litter mates went fast and he was left because no one wanted his white hair every where. His hair does get on every thing, but; he is truly a fine cat. As are the two tuxedos.

I think it is great that shelters are trying new and creative ways to get people to come in and adopt a pet! It is vital in the times we are in to try and help out these creatures! Many pets are finding themselves homeless as well as many people! Thanks for spreading the word.

I did not know that!  Why wouldn't anyone want a black pet, they're so pretty!  Well then I'm glad they are doing that!  Thank you for making us smarter and more aware.

Susan -I thought it was rather clever to use the biggest shopping day and try to get people in to the shelter.

Fred -Looking back on my menagerie, it has been a revolving door of whatever animal is 'dropped on the doorstep' - Jazzy Cat has been my only solid black animal, but there have been a lot of multi-colored with black being dominant (like Berta)

Jennifer -I know!  I think I have a profound biased for black cats.  They seem to be calm and collected yet ready to curl up next to you whenever they feel the need.  Jazzy Cat attempts to be the animal ambassador and I watch him trying to make friends with dogs, cats, squirrels and people that pass by.

Scott -'humas to train' is absolutely right!  :-)

Beth -Yes, it's absolutely ludicrous, but I see evidence of it all the time.

CP - I'm so glad that this area is one not to automatically euthanize pit bulls.  They are one of the most incredible bread out there.  I'm glad you see it, too -

Lou -That's a good idea... I find it more rewarding to provide a gift to someone whose reaction you'll never see over some 'spoiled' niece or nephew ;-)

Cat -Thank you.  It's amazing how universal the statistic is... and if you see the black cat statistic that is in one of the links above it is very scary.

Bob -Yes, I have found myself in love with black cats, so I see your bias.

Nate -That's great!  She must be doing well at the ripe old age of 14!

Cindy -No wonder you can't believe the statistic... You completely beat the odds with 100% adoption rate of black animals!

Carol - I must say I understand the white hair issue.  The worst excuse that I ever heard for someone bringing a cat to the shelter was because it was a calico and no longer matched the woman's furniture... it takes all kinds...

Tony & Libby - It is shocking, isn't it?  I'm glad that shelters are holding events like this to bring the issue to peoples attention.
