Google Real Estate Search - Then and Now

By
Real Estate Agent with United Realty Group, Inc. BK641413

While reading one of the 9/11 blog posts yesterday, I came across an interesting link that made me want to find out more.  The link was to what the Google homepage looked like on 9/11/01, which showed that you could "search 1,610,476,000 web pages".  These were ALL the pages Google had indexed as of that date.

Fast-forward 5 years later to 9-11-06 and Google no longer shows the number of pages you can search.  However, just so we have a point of reference as to how much the Internet has changed over the past 5 years, I Googled the words "real estate" which lead to the search results page showing on the top right side that there were 'about' 903,000,000 pages just for real estate.  That's more than half the number of all pages indexed 5 years ago!

And we wonder why SEO is soooo important!  Granted that number is for the world, but in my area, I got 9,500,000 when I search "St. Paul Real Estate".  I come up at 141 with one blog, and 163 and 198 with Active Rain.  I'm impressed.

Wow the world has changed a lot in five years.

How has the Internet impacted you as a real estate professional?

I believe I under estimate how much the internet has changed things in my business.

The NAR 2005 Profile of Buyers and Sellers reported that:

78% of Buyers search the internet
24% of Buyers first found the home they purchased online
8% of Buyers found their real estate agent online

The Internet is already perhaps the most important marketing element in Real Estate and I see every reason to believe for the near future that it will continue to climb in importance!

I think there is no doubt about it: the Internet has forever changed the way agents/brokerages do business and, given time, it will continue to take on a larger role.

People are using the web for everything. I don't even have a phone book any more. I use yellowbook.com, see advertising does work.

I agree with you, Christine.  I almost always turn to the Internet for information on anything I want to research.  It's like having a virtual library at your fingertips!  I wish I'd had this wonderful resource while I was growing up.
