There will be no Newnan Candlelight Tour of Homes in December 2008

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

House decorated for ChristmasFor the first time in many years, there will be no Newnan Candlelight tour of homes this Christmas season.

Although the tour was very popular, there was some difficulty getting at least five homes within walking distance of each other, a necessary prerequisite the event. The city of Newnan is nicknamed the "City of Homes," and features many fine homes, some of which predate the civil war.

Newnan's antebellum treasures and a pristine downtown area lends itself to both history lovers and decorators alike, as the entire town is bedecked for Christmas.

A spokesperson from the Piedmont Newnan Hospital Auxiliary, which hosts the event and receives a portion of the proceeds, said that the tour will be back in 2009.

So Richard, what do you think the reason is? Economic times, lost the spirit?

I hate it when a Tradition gets dropped for any reason. Take plenty of pictures for us to see Richard during the holidays. They remind me of Home.

Nancy,,,

I believe that perhaps they started too late, and there were not enough willing participants!

Mel...

Not this year. This is one of the holiday traditions n our family. Rats.

Cameron...

You know I will!

Richard - Do you think this means less people are decorating and willing to shell out extra cash for electricity for all the lights?  I know that's been on my mind - conserve everything I can! :)

April...

I don't know how to read all of this. This is one thing my wife and I did religiously every year, and it was great on a cold night to walk from house to house! I am really going to miss it this year.

Richard:  Bummer to hear that! I served on the Tour of Homes Committee for Midtown Neighbors' Association for 2 years, but not on the committee for '09. I don't know that we are having any problems with getting homes for the tour, but sponsorships...that may be a whole other ball game. Morris & Raper InTown had been the presenting sponsor for the past two years, but elected not to do it this year.

Ray and I were planning to sponsor a house, but with all that has happened in the market, we are going to have to pass this year.

Sign of the times.

I'm going along with everybody else.  The economy is down sizing and eliminating many holiday traditions around the country.  I'm hoping we get outside pictures of those homes decorated for the season in Newnan??

Richard,

I hope that this is not a tradition that will be forgot about.  It does sound like it was something that folks looked forward to every year.

I'm sorry to hear that.  It sounds like it would be great and certainly something the entire family would enjoy.  I hope they stick to their word and bring it back next year.

Kristin...

I think that is a great loss for the community!

JL...

It is a real disappointment!

Thom...

Ah, so the problem is pervasive. That's too bad, it's such a big part of the holidays!

Richard:  You should get in touch with some clients and host a one day, fill-in event.  Get a listing or two that is decked out for the holidays, and some buyers that are settled in to their new homes and also decked out for the holidays.  Host Community Open Houses....with the focus being on meeting your neighbors and spreading holiday cheer.  The homes may not be historic, but the idea is to get the community together. Plus, it would make you the King of Newnan (like you aren't already).  :)

Hi Richard... I've always noticed that when traditions lose momentum it's always more difficult to get them moving again.  I sgure hopr that won't be the case next year for the Newnan Tour of Homes.
