Hi Tweets!

This is my second post in what I think is going to be a series. When I posted my first earlier in the week,(click here) I got a lot of feedback from many of our colleagues here in the Rain and one of the common concerns among many is the confusion of what Twitter is actually supposed to be used. What is it purpose in today's fast paced information ready technological world?

Lesson 1

It is a communication tool first and foremost. It is or better was designed to combine the technology of chat rooms, instant messaging and blogging into one vehicle. The immediacy of the results for those that are connected is one of the biggest objectives and is very efficient. It uses a very short 160 word space to deliver your message.

In todays fast paced world every one's attention spans are strained and very short, but the basic precepts of communicating within a network and building relationships by spreading valuable information are there as they have been for as long as humans have roamed the earth. The fact that it is such a small and limited space is not an accident. One of the ideas behind it was to connect more people by grabbing their attention in short bites and then having the ability to share it with all those on your chosen network. It is supposed to be a "micro blog" so the concepts for blogging still hold true for Twittering. It is content driven and captures the attention of the followers in a very brief space of time.

The coolest thing is we can follow who we choose and as long as the information has value for the audience, it brings credibility to your arena of expertise. The only potential drawback is it transparency. That is why it is so important to make sure the information you deliver is pertinent to the profile you have chosen to display about yourself.

First lesson.....create a profile for your objective. Give people an initial idea and reason to be a follower. Chris Brogan, Gary Vaynerchuk, Jeff Turner, Mike Like Mueller and many, many others that have built a good following because they bring people to them and give them a reason to come back.

Active Rain is a great tool for helping establish a broad following to a very large audience. Twitter narrows the audience down to a more manageable group. But people need good information to know why you are who you are and what you do.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know and if I can be of further assistance. The most important thing is to have fun.

Hi Bo, I appreciate your posts on this subject.  I find very few of my associates know anything about Twitter (heck, there are very few that blog), so I feel even though I don't get it, at least I'm trying.
