Well today is the day many of us have been waiting patiently to happen. The legendary hockey player Bobby Orr will be returning to Oshawa today to have his number 2 jersey retired to the rafters in General Motors Centre. The ceremony will take place prior to tonight's Oshawa Generals game. This is the team where Orr started his junior career at the ripe old age of 14. He showed his great talent early in life and after thrilling many of us with his puck handling and speed he was drafted by the Boston Bruins and went on to become a super star in the NHL. His records speak for themselves and even though his career was cut short by nagging knee injuries he is respected by many to be the greatest defenceman of all time in The NHL.
The arena will be packed tonight and when Bobby steps onto the ice the roar will be deafening. No doubt many of the fans tonight will have been in the stands when Orr played here some 45 years ago. We can remember him blocking shots from the point, killing penalties or carrying the puck from one end of the ice to the other out skating the opposition time and again to score an important goal. Some of us went to school with him and remember him to be a classy guy even then. We hear that some of his team mates from the Generals and the Bruins will be in attendance to help Bobby and his family celebrate the occassion. Word has it that Wren Blair will be able to attend and we are sure many other people who influenced his career will be on the ice as well.
Congratulations Bobby, nobody deserves this high recognition more than you!
