Black and whites

Are black and white photos allowed?  I sure hope so.  I used to take pictures for a newspaper and they were black and whites.  over the years black and white film got harder and harder to come by and people would give me a dumb look when I wanted to get it developed.  I never used a digital camera before for black and whites and it just isn't the same but with a little practice it can be done.  I ran a post on St. Paul Real Estate Blog today in black and white and these are the pictures, and I added the pictures that I did not have room for.  There is one I would like to have a print of.  Will be interesting to see if the kiosk at the local cub store prints black and whites.

Teresa, I love black and white photos.  They really emphasize the shapes and shadows.  There's a calmness about them, they aren't "loud" like color shots can be.

Your pics are great, BTW.

Black and white photos are a form of art.  Color photos make folks smile.

I keep my trustee Minolta 35mm just for black and white photos.  But, I don't do it so much any more because my photos started to look like something out of the Gulag.  They looked like like they should be used to illustrate something Solgenitzen wrote.

Lenn - funny.  I was worried that people would think I am depressed or something if I just displayed black and whites.  The grain elevators and power plants look a little "gritty".

Sarah - they are confusing to shoot because I see the color through the lens and have to translate it as I shoot.  The color is distracting and several of my photos turned out kind of gray.  I must have taken 40 or 50 photos before I got any that I like.

I am really surprised that anyone commented on this.  :) Thanks

T: Love the B/W photos. Maybe we should try B/W graphics?

I love B&W photos! Love 'em. Love 'em! Somehow, if the photographer is careful, the very essence of the subject in the photo seems to present itself in a way that reaches out to the very essence of you and me, the lucky viewer..as we see in your photos here...and so there takes place a meaningful exchange.

Maybe we should have an Active Rain, black and white photo contest.

Some of the BEST pictures I took of my kids growing up are in black and white.

I love black and white photography...people, places, architecture...  These are very nice Teresa.  You have some great photos there.

When we were in college my ex-husband (looooong b4 he was my husband or ex-husband)  took a photography course and we spent weekends with him taking great black and white photos of a house that was being rehabbed.  It was a Victorian House and we called it the haunted house.  You can get a mood with black and white which color loses...

Wow!  Thanks for the encouragement.  I did not think this would get any comments at all and they are most appreciated.

Teresa,

I enjoy black and white photography as well.  Not all digital cameras will take black and whites and sometimes you need to use red filters to get the right contrast.  The Ansel Adams exhibit is here in Santa Ana, California at the Bowers Museum.  I saw it just over a year ago when I was in Boston, MA.  He was the true master of black and white photography.

I can take digital black and whites and also simulate filter settings with my Canon 20D DSLR, which I enjoy doing.

For those with digital cameras that do not have a black and white mode, Photoshop and some of the other photo imaging software have conversions from color to black and white or to sepias.  You can then adjust the contrast to get the sharpness you desire.

B&W is a fun and creative part of photography.  I used to do B&W film photography and develop and print my own in my darkroom years ago.  Technically your pictures are gray tones.  It is interesting when you alter the picture to true B&W, without the gray tones.  They truely look like a work of art.  This also can be done in Photoshop, our current age darkroom.

Thanks for sharing your B&Ws.

Thanks for sharing this. I love BW photos. I hope to master the skill some day. I think it's harder to edit. But that may because of my inexperience with them.

From an artistic point of view I think some properties may benefit from black-and-white shots - Industrial properties come to mind....I think it gives the marketing an edge.

Teresa, These are great.  I think its helps us appreciate what we have today...kinda like stepping back in time when things were so much more simplier.  Like a mini-trip.  Thanks needed that on a Monday.

Black and white photos remind me of the 50's perhaps because many of the photos I have from that time are in black and white.  But you T are too young to remember the 50's.

I do like them a lot!

Linda - my parents took several black and white of us in the 60's.  I had a set of wedding pcitures done in black and white and have pictures of my own babies in black and white.  They will last much longer than color and I am really glad that I did it.  No I don't remember the 50's. :)  I remember a chunk of the 60's but don't tell anyone. :)

Bob - yes they are simpler, kind of black and white even. :) I just wish I could stop taking them. :)  it reminds me of the hours I used to spend running around with a camera trying to get that special shot for the paper.

I like the black and white photos.  I have boxes filled with B & W's going back to the early 1900's, mostly family shots, some in sepia.  B & W always brings back memories for me.  Recently I have been playing with these features but the B & W has not worked on any of the shots.  Ines may be right, they do seem to work very well for the more industrial type shots.
