Little Tiny Trains Bring out the Kid in You

Visit Bandana Square in Saint Paul

My son loves trains. Loves them. Anytime he sees Thomas the Train, he gets really excited and just has to grab it. If we are driving and see a train, we must stop, roll the windows down, so he can see and hear it. Of course, we love to oblige him because it is just too cute.

Last week I took my Wisconsin real estate class in St Paul, at a complex called Bandana Square. It is an old train station used at the turn of the century, and is currently used mostly for offices and a Best Western Hotel. The complex is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Children's Museum was located here a few years ago too. It is a fantastic place to visit and see what an old train complex used to look like. Even though offices now reside inside, much of the original internal architecture is still present in the rafters and the exterior facades are in fantastic condition.

Take you kids to visit the Twin City Model Railroad Museum. It has scaled down displays of model trains and is a treat to see. If they love trains then it will be very hard to get them out of the museum. They also have a couple Thomas the Train activity tables where kids can play while you look around.

Eric - Thanks! I try to mix up the blog with places to visit, history of homes, and local real estate news. The Twin Cities have sooo much to do and it is truly a beautiful place to live. I would love to work where you do. The New Orleans Garden District is one of my favorite places as I specialize in Historic Homes. I was a southerner up until a year ago when I moved to the North from Pensacola. Enjoy the Gulf for me!

The old Chattanooga TN railroad station has been turned into a hotel - you can actually stay in the train cars. That could be a fun trip for your son.

Eric- I know all about frying in the south, and I have been in New Orleans in August and I decided I would never go back that month again. I look forward to seeing some great homes in your blog next week. I remember a beautiful very large white home on St Charles that I wish I could tour someday. Let me know when it posts!

Sharon - oh, staying in an actual train, that might be too much! I haven't been to Chattanooga in at least a decade.

Thank you for this post, I LOVE reading about other places.  I have never been to the Twin Cities, though it's on my (growing) list of places to visit.  Right now I'm trying to plan a vacation with my daughter and am just stuck...there's so much I haven't seen.  Or do I go back to a place I've seen and LOVED?  A difficult decision.....

Carole - I am in your shoes too. I have so many places I want to see. My husband and I were just talking how we would really love to see Vermont and New Hampshire, oh, and the Grand Canyon, etc. Then of course we want to go back to Cambria, CA and relax sometime. Sooo many choices!
