According to scientists, multitasking actually does not exist, instead our brain just moves from one task to another with incredible speed. Every time I see a Mom with 5 kids running all over a store I wonder if that is true! How the heck else can she shop, keep up with the kids, and talk on the cell phone at the same time??? You are in your car with clients, they are peppering you with questions, you are trying to find a home, reading a listing, and of course the phone rings, if that ain't multitasking I don't know what is! Also the experts say multitasking makes you less efficient, well then I am one of the most inefficient people on earth. As I am writing this I am updating a website, listening to a talk show on the computer and answering E-mails. If you can only perform one task at a time, you cannot show property, it would be impossible. Experts also say you should turn off all distractions, personally, I welcome them Lol. Too all you Moms chasing those kids, you are not multitasking... YEAH RIGHT!!!
I tend to have a lot of things going on at once, but I've begun to realize that I get more done when I work on one project until it's completed before moving on to something else.
Darrell - I think we are all wired differently, my wife cannot show homes for more than an hour or two, it wears her out. I can go all day...
Hi Frank and Jodi,
Thanks for the interesting post! I too agree that many people are definitely multi-tasking from the time they wake up until they finally get to bed at night. Between phonecalls, children's activities and the day to day of the office- it can become overwhelming to some. I personally accomplish more when I take a break from everything and give one project my focus, but this is impossible to do all the time. I hope the two of you take a break for yourselves and enjoy this holiday season. Thanks again for your post.
James - Thanks for the kind note. Lets face it, with technology today, we are all at the beck and call of emails phone calls etc. Have a great Holiday!
I am not sure multi-tasking exists. Our brain is more efficient if we only do one thing for a focused period of time, even if it is only for two minutes.
Jim & David - I've seen cooks in a busy restaurant juggle countless orders that are not even on paper prepare multple meals without mistake, how do they do that??
That is just crazy. Isn't MULTI-TASKING what this business is all about? I think it is and that those so called experts are WRONG!
And all that time, I thought I was mutli tasking....so it's basically adult add moving from task to the next...sounds about right...
There is NO way you can be in this business and NOT be able to multi-task--just as your example showed! I guess I'm right there with you in inefficiency!!
