Rock Sculptures at Cardiff State Beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California

My stone sculpture at Cardiff State Beach

Sometimes art can be found in the most unexpected places. Mother Nature has her own way of creative artistry at the beach in the sand, waves, driftwood, shells and vegetation.

Sometimes humans intervene and create their own artistic works in unique places.

Cardiff State beach along the coast road/Route 101 in Cardiff is one such venue.

Unknown "artists" for years have created stone sculptures along the coast road here, using the smooth and jagged stones dumped there to help with erosion. These sculptures appear without notice, at various times during the year, in groups or sometime as solitary testaments to a passing human's creativity. You rarely see them being created, but just come upon them while driving by or walking the somewhat deserted part of the beach. You may not see them for many weeks, but then suddenly one or more will appear.

The rock sculptures sit sometimes for days, or perhaps for only short periods, until they are disrupted by the winds, a child's hand, or an errant seagull seeking a perch to watch for prey on the sands below. One has to wonder...who was the creator? What inspired them? Were they pleased by what they saw? Who else sees these creations and wonders?

I, too, was inspired, and created my own "masterpiece." ([photo at top of page] I wonder - how long will it sit there undisturbed? Perhaps I will check back in a few days.

Enjoy a relaxing moment with these sculptures and music.

Interesting artwork, Jeff. Here in Florida we're more inclined to building sand castles. Whenever I visit my older son in California, we go to the beach and look for agates.

Nice formation. I could sure enjoy that beach after 8 inches of snow, and it being 14 degrees this morning.

All my best!

Thanks, Julie. There is nothing as peaceful as sitting by or walking along the ocean

Sharon - well your beaches ARE a bit different but beautiful as well.

Tom - keep that cold and snow right where it is, buddy. I feel sorry for you.

Thanks, George. I thought the sculptures were pretty neat even though Mother Nature did not create them

Kelly - glad you enjoyed them. It was fun to take photos on this gray, gloomy day.

Lisa - LOL. I think the FLorida beaches are wonderful.

Jeff - That looks so cool. And of course I love the water - no water here (much) unless you count the snow that is melting. lol ~Rita

Wow Jeff, A sculpture as well. That one was very nice and really liked it. It was actually inspiring. I need to get to the beach more, I used to take my day off and spend it at the beach. Now, I was not creating, mostly vegging and playing in the waves but having seen your creation and others, I find it a challenge to leave something wonderful behind.

Rita - LOL. At least it is melting! I could not live far from the ocean, I have been near by on both coasts for too long.

William - it was fun to create something myself. I did not go with that intent, only to photograph the others I saw when driving by the other day.

Endre - I am from Cambridge (most recently). These rocks were put there, and are not naturally occurring as you would find on the Maine coast. We have a bunch of the same kind of river stones that were used in some landscaping in our yard.
