Plaxico, what were you thinking?

Totowa NJ resident Plaxico Burress will not play again this season for the defending Super Bowl Champion NY Giants. Burress, the talented wide receiver - who caught the winning touchdown pass in last years Super Bowl and signed a multi-year, muti-million dollar renegotiated contract just prior to the season starting - after holding out during training camp - has finally (after many run ins with team officials, league officials, and coaching staff - garnering a multitude of fines) run himself out of town, Although the Giants haven't officially cut Burress from the team, they have suspended him for the remainder of this season. And most likely, his career with the Giants has come to a tumultuous end after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a NYC nightclub with a concealed gun that he did not have a carrying permit for in New York. This incident occured 2 nights before a game that he was not going to be able to play because of an injured hamstring. Bet he wishes he stayed home and rested.

Burress was charged with illegal weapons possession and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants Burress prosecuted to the full extent of the law - which would entail a 3 1/2 - 15 year sentence if convicted of these charges. So clearly - whether a lapse in judgment or an arrogant, above the law type attitude (arguments have been made on both fronts) this talented and wealthy athlete/celebrity has jeopardized not only his career but also his legacy and Hall of Fame chances with this latest incident.

What causes successful athletes and celebrities to engage in risky behavior? Is it the money, the fame, the feeling of invulnerability? Please feel free to express your opinions.....

Jim One word; arrogance. They just don't seem to get that they are not beyond real life. If they ply well they seem to feel that anything will be tolerated.  I frankly think NY lws are too tough on certin things, but, when in Rome.

Yes Gayle, that could be one reason. I guess maybe when you're a star player, you could lose perspective on reality and think you're invincible or even above the law. I'm not offering this as an excuse, but maybe an explaination for the behavior...I don't really know.

No excusses permitted...

They should throw the book at these "stars".

He has hurt his family, friends and fans who relied upon his performace on the field.

Hi Mike, many people and fans feel the same way. It's very hard for us in the real world to understand the behavior.

Just a note for you - please consider joining our group - We Love North Jersey - http://activerain.com/groups/welovenorthjersey

It's sad that they don't think about consequences more.  Such great talent - taken for granted.

Mindy, I think that's the worst part, they take their talent for granted.

Here is a thought... wealth and IQ don't go up at the same pace. Just because someone is talented and/or rich doesn't necessarily mean they have common sense.

Jim, PB is a waste of talent and money. He needs to be sitting by Michael Vick.

Sal...you mean 2 + 2 doesn't equal 5? The sad part is that you and I would probably play for free if we had the opportunity. Some of these guys just don't understand how lucky they are.

Danny, it's really amazing, isn't it? Loved your post on this mess - lol
