This year I have seen more than a few people become homeless and it has really touched my heart. I have owned a weekly motel for more than 5 years in Costa Mesa and have seen more people this year than ever before become homeless. These are some really good people with unfortunate circumstances! Their life stories are touching and there are many reasons as to why they are homeless… some within their control but for many it is life challenges that they were dealt. I chose to get involved with the homeless by donating time/money to a soup kitchen. I thought this would be the most impactful as I would be able to be with the homeless people and provide the most basic necessity, food. After detailed investigation, I came across “Someone Cares” Soup Kitchen (click here for a short video clip) that serves over 300 meals per day, 7 days a week to low income, homeless, divorced and abandoned and mentally ill people per day. On Christmas and Thanksgiving they serve more than 1,200!! “Someone Cares” was started in 1990 and is the only Soup Kitchen in Costa Mesa. The Soup Kitchen operates on all donated items. This year unfortunately donations are down 20% and people needing help is up 20%. So they need help more than ever!

“There are 34,898 homeless people in Orange County, the 2nd highest number in the Nation. Someone Cares Soup Kitchen feeds over 118,000 meals to the homeless and hungry each year, 60% are children.”

So this leads me to why I am writing you this letter. I have taken on an ambitious project and need your help! I have committed to raising… $30,000 in 30 Days! So how can you help? There are two ways!

  • Financial donations – We have secured great contacts to buy most of the childrens gifts and backpack items below wholesale as we are buying direct from a national consolidator in very large quantities. You can donate $75, $100, $200 or whatever you can give to help the needs of somebody less fortunate.
  • Backpack donations – Keep your eyes/ears open for possible items that can be donated for our 400 back packs (gloves, socks, t-shirts, sweatshirts, water bottles, hats, granola bars, toiletry items, bus passes or anything that can fit into a backpack and could be used by a homeless person living on the street).

The $30,000 will be used for…

  • 400 Backpacks that will be distributed to the homeless living on the street (Cost: $25) The back pack will include: socks, t-shirt, sweatshirt, flashlight, first aid kit, water bottle, rain poncho, gloves, winter hat/scarf, baseball cap, bottles of water, granola bars, toothbrush, toothpaste and much, much more!
  • 700 Children’s Toy Gift Bags to be given out on Christmas day. (Cost: $15) The gift bags will include a combination of 3-5 items (based upon gender/age) that would include yo-yo, playing cards, stuffed animals, board games, board puzzles, soccer balls, jump rope, action figures, crayons/markers, dolls and many other toys!
  • 1,200 Christmas dinners served on Christmas Day (Cost $8) Full holiday dinner with salad, soup and desert.

**We are able to buy large lots of items for the backpacks and christmas gifts from a national wholesaler that is giving us the items at a 75% discount. Our buying power is tremendous in the large lots that we are buying. We also have received many donated items for the backpacks as well.

Time is of the Essence. We need to have the backpacks completed in 2 weeks!

Your Donation is Critical to reaching $30,000!

I hope that you can find in your heart to contribute and then help pass out the backpacks to see first hand the faces of the homeless people that you are helping. It means so much to them that someone cares and that they are not forgotten! Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

If you could also enlist any friends, family, work colleagues by forwarding this email or speaking with them personally it would be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions or would like to find out how you can further help please call me at 949-463-2223 or send me an email at corey@avalonproperties.net.
