Relocating with Pets

By
Real Estate Agent with Domain Realty

Prior to becoming a Real Estate Sales Associate in Florida, I volunteered for over a decade as Executive Director of Northcoast Bird Adoption and Rehabilitation Center, Inc. in Cleveland Ohio. So, like most people in rescue, I have acquired a lot of pets.

When I decided to move to Florida, it was never even a consderation to give my pets away "because I was moving." This is one of the main reasons people give up their pets. It required a lot of planning and preparation to move 11 animals (7 parrots, 2 Dobermans and 2 cats) across the country, but it is entirely achievable.

You must first decide whether you want to hire a pet moving service that takes care of shipping, etc. of your pets or if you are going to handle the relocation of them yourself. I chose to handle it myself. I am most comfortable when they are entirely in my care so that I can attend to their needs myself.

It took 2 days and 2 SUV's to move the pets, along with their carriers, food and water for the trip, and stands for the parrots to perch on while in the hotel room where we stopped to sleep.

It was a bit stressful (mostly for me), but all in all, they made the trip with no problem and no worse for wear. After living in florida for 3 years, I can say it was well worth the work because I can't imagine a day without my flock. All are thriving in the sunshine state!

If you need advice on relocating with pets, please contact me and I'll be happy to help! You never have to leave your pets behind. Make the effort, they will be forever gratful.

Kim-I've never understood how someone can leave a pet behind when moving.  I guess because I tend to "humanize" my pets.  One of my dogs -a German Shepherd- I got because my client was moving out of town and did not want to take the dog with him.  Most people were afraid of him (the dog-not the client), but we got along great.  I've had him now for a couple of years and he has become part of our family.
