Rest in Peace Chevy Chase Bank

By

It's a sad day in Maryland.

Chevy Chase Bank is closing its doors.

Capital One to Buy Local Banking Icon Chevy Chase

The writing was on the wall. The vultures circled, and this fine banking institution and member of our community has sold out to the highest bidder.

Unfortunately, the high bid also comes from one of the lowest representatives of the banking world. Capital One.

                           vultures

With a reputation of preying on those of limited means, this disrepuatable credit card pusher is continuing its practice of snatching up local banks to feast on their deposits as a means to the end.

The bank to which I have been loyal for 25 years is no longer. I recall depositing my first paycheck in my new account.

The relationship is ended. I can not stomach Capital One...their smug image, their reputed predatory practices, nor their annoying advertising campaigns.

With a heavy heart, I will now go shopping for a new financial institution.

Rest in Peace, Chevy Chase Bank.

Funny. I can remember speaking with a VP at Chevy Chase that proclaimed their strength was in their loan portfolio. She claimed they never got involved in risky mortgages. It seems the quest for the almighty dollar has overcome Mr. Saul and his family.

Capital One..............Ugh...............

It is nice to know that BB&T has a presence in the community.

Robin, I lived in the DC area for 30 years and banked at Chevy.  Bummer.  And guess what, that is another bank along with Wamu and Wachovia that were not on the FDIC watch list.  What does that say about the banks we suspect are in trouble?  Time to find  a nice spot in the backyard and hold a burial, money that is.  No place seems safe anymore.

Robin - I felt incredibly sad when I heard this on the news this morning. Another DC institution bites the dust. They will join Garfinkels, Woodies, Hechts and others ...

I too don't trust Cap One after an experience with a business credit card. If you have a Cap One card check your interest rates very carefully. When I asked them why they increased a rate for no reason their comment was "because we can".

Terry, you are correct in that it seems the only the big boys are getting the bail-out attention...and then they turn around and use those funds to buy up the smaller community institutions. Probably not the original intention of our leaders in Congress, eh?

Lynn,

It's almost akin to losing a friend when an institution with which one has such a long-term relationship just up and folds.

Ah well, the beat goes on.

Woodies?  I haven't heard that in a while!  Was Hechingers a DC one too?
