AT HOME in New Castle New Hampshire

New Castle New HampshireAT HOME IN NEW CASTLE -

As you can see from the sign that greets when you drive into New Castle New Hampshire, you're driving onto a very quaint and charming island, dating back to the early 1600's.  There are a good number of homes on this cluster of small islands that date back to the 1600's, that are being lived in still.New Castle NH Piscataqua River

From the narrow winding streets, you'll see some really stunning antique homes, gorgeous water views of the Piscataqua River or the back channel, and a slightly modern day view of what life back then might have been like.

New Castle NH Post OfficeNew Castle was originally known as "The Great Island", being the largest of several islands in the mouth of the Piscataqua River.  The Piscataqua River is the dividing line between New Hampshire and Maine, and has the third fastest river current in the world.

New Castle is the smallest town in New Hampshire, covering only .8 square miles, which is roughly 512 acres or so, and the only town in NH located entirely on islands.  Surrounded by water, New Castle is connected to the 'mainland' via the causeway to Portsmouth and a drawbridge to Rye, both taking you over water and offering up even more delightful views of our great Seacoast here in New Hampshire

New Castle NH Great Island Common

The current population of New Castle NH is 1,034 residents, giving it a population density of 1,276 people per square mile.  The island residents love seaside living, and get to enjoy a wonderful ocean side park called owned by the town, "Great Island Common".

New Castle NH Great Island CommonGreat Island Common is a 31 acre ocean side park, open to local residents for no charge.  Non-residents, during the summer season have access for a small charge.  What a great place for family gatherings, picnics, swimming, and more.  New Castle Beach is right next to The Common, making it a perfectly relaxing place to spend the day with friends and family.  Because it's tucked away like it is, very few of the summer tourists that descend on the area find their way to this quiet relaxing spot of seaside serenity.New Castle NH Maude Trefethen Elementary School

New Castle
residents have their own elementary school, Maude H. Trefethen Elementary School, for the town's children to attend.  They move on to Portsmouth for middle school and high school.  Children from kindergarten through 6th grade in New Castle attend this school.

New Castle NH Wentworth Hotel

The stunningly renovated Wentworth-by-the-Sea Hotel is located on New Castle.  This hotel is on the National Register for Historic Places, deservedly so.  The "Hotel Wentworth", as it was originally named, was built atop a hill in 1874, and has fabulous views of the Little Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.  The 1905 Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the Russo-Japanese War, was negotiated here by President Theodore Roosevelt.

New Castle NH Coast Guard Station - Ann Cummings

A quaint quiet fishing village for most its existence, New Castle has played an important role in our country's history.  Home to an actively operating Coast Guard Station, New Castle is also home to the historic Fort Constituition site and to the historic Fort Stark site.

New Castle NH Fort William and Mary MarkerFort Constituition overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the Piscataqua River, and was originally named Fort William and Mary.  This fort played a great role in the Revolutionary War.   Fort Stark was one of seven forts built to protect the Portsmouth Harbor.

Originally these forts were built to protect the colonists, but as the area's importance in the ship-building industry grew and as the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard grew, the importance of these forts grew as well, and they all underwent major fortifications.

If you're a history buff, be sure to check out the links on these forts.  You'll find some fascinating history there, as well as additional information on other forts in the area, and the roles they played, not just for this area, but for our country as well.

Great post Ann. I love the pictures..Jay and I drove up the coast yesterday and we were amazed by the damage the flooding caused. Jay made a little video and took pictures.

Hi Monika - thanks for your comments!  I haven't ventured down the coast as yet, but from what I've heard from friends and from what Ive seen on the news, it's not a pretty picture.  I saw some heavy duty flooding around the Exeter area while out showing property on Tuesday - that was scary looking to me.

You should have stopped by - we were out working in the yard, and then kicking back and relaxing outside.

Hi Sally - please do come for a visit!!  It really is a very beautiful part of this great country we live in!  There are so many really special places to visit all over the state of New Hampshire, but I'm pretty partial to my towns here in the coastal areas of NH and southern Maine.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Ann -

Came by & read your post earlier this AM, then got distracted for a bit. Of course, I thought I had subscribed to your blog and/or added you as an Assoc previously, so figured it'd be quick-n-easy to come back to rate ("High-5", of course!) & comment. Took longer than expected, as I hadn't established those connections before now. Anyway...

Amazing presentation Ann, I just love it! Was originally born in Mass, have family 1-1/2 hours north (Colebrook), and my sister & her family used to live in Concord ('bout 1-hr south), so I'm pretty familiar with the northern and central regions of our state. The one area I have never visited though is the coast ... and you've painted such an appealing picture here, that I may just have to take my wife down sometime soon for a surprise getaway!

Got yourself a new fan in me, Ann! I'm bouncing all over AR Land this AM, and have actually read your other post already, so I need to head back to rate/comment that one too.

Take Care!

Scott

Danny - thank you for reading and commenting on this post!  New Castle is a very quaint town on an island-loaded with really old homes and narrow winding streets.....beautiful to drive through.

Scott - Thank you for such wonderful words!!  And I'm honored to have you as a 'new fan' - thank you for that, too!!  You really should hop into your car and bring your wife this way for a visit.  I guarantee you'll find this a beautiful charming area.  And I'd love to meet you, too.

Great post Ann...next time do pictures of some of the boats in that harbor!

Very Impressive if I remember!

Hi Joan,

I certainly plan to do that, but I have to wait for them to be in the harbor.  Most boats come out of the water over the winter, and they've not yet begun to be put back into the water just yet.  And you're right, very impressive for sure!!

Thanks for reading!

Ann,

This is an exquisite post about your area. I'm a MA native, and I do get a little homesick for the ambiance of New England. Thanks for the tour!
