When people think about the Oregon Coast, they usually think about the mighty Pacific, crashing waves, blow holes, whales, sea stars and urchins and amazing sunsets like the one we had last Sunday, complete with a crescent moon with Jupiter and Venus nestled in its arc.
They don't always know that the Oregon Coast and the Florence, Oregon area in particular is blessed with something like 18 fresh water lakes. It's a fisher's paradise, that's for sure. Take Mercer Lake: Mercer is heavily planted with trout and there are some native cutthroat and rainbow trout. With 355 acres and over 8 miles of shoreline, there's plenty of area to keep you busy. Siltcoos Lake is widely regarded as one of the best bass and panfish lakes in the northwest. It contains largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie, bluegill, brown bullheads, cutthroat and rainbow trout, coho salmon, shite sturfeon and a few years ago a striped bass weighing nearly 17 pounds was caught on a surface lure. It is 3,160 acres with nearly 28 miles of shoreline. Now that's a WOWSER!
Elbow Lake is a scenic lake located just west of Highway 101 about seven miles north of Reedsport. Look for rainbow trout, yellow perch, largemouth bass, bluegills and brown bullheads. Some very big bass have been caught from the lake. Elbow Lake does not receive much fishing pressure either.
Munsel Lake is one of the clearest lakes on the Oregon coast with water visibility close to 15 feet. Munsel contains largemouth bass and yellow perch with a few bleugills and brown bullheads also present; even a few searun cutthroat trout enter the lake in the late fall and the lake is generously stocked with rainbow and sometimes cutthroat.
There is a very active bass fishing community in the Florence area with lots of tournaments for the serious fisher. So many people have fallen in love with this area because of it's lake fishing that they decide to retire here and buy a lakefront home so that they can dip their rod any time right out their back door.
If you'd like a complete run down of all the lakes, just let me know and I can email you a report. Happy fishing and may Santa bring you a BIG ONE!
This is Mercer Lake. The blue water can really be that blue! And believe it or not, there aren't that many fishers that fish Mercer Lake. I live above the lake: it's often so quiet that I rarely hear a boat motor.
This home is located right on Siltcoos Lake with its own private dock. At nearly 4,000 square feet, and two acres with 170 feet of lakefront, it will appeal both to the bass fisher and their partner. Complete with fishing shop, and a high end bass boat. It's for sale, so let me know if you'd like me to send you the MLS number or the video tour.
