The Commerce of Social Networking...need your help!

Services for Real Estate Pros with Yellowbook

Hello, I have been tasked with presenting the benefits of social networking to my peers at an upcoming sales meeting.  Beyond just reconnecting with old friends, colleagues and classmates; how can someone use these social networks to actually grow their business and make $$$??

I have a good understanding of what AR can do for someone.  In a nutshell, the blog creates relevant "local" content and provides good "Google juice" to help a Realtor present themselves as the local area expert on the web when people are searching for a new home.

What I'm uncertain about is how Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc can be used to promote a business, product or service.  I have some suspicions but would like to hear from the AR community.  How are you using these sites or how do you envision the model developing over time??

This isn't really related to promoting, but rather potential success, look up your clients on facebook to give you a better perspective of what they're all about.

Thanks Kim, there does seem to be an unwritten rult that blantant self promotion is frowned upon in social networks.  People want to "buy" not be "sold".  This is a good point, using it to help uncover potential client hot buttons, needs, interests.  Allows you to connect on a deeper level.  Good!  Keep em coming!

Social networking needs to be soft and subtle... Like to join a club, be nice and show up. Day in and day out the people will find you as a good realtor.

Rochelle, great question!! In fact we're still trying to figure that out;)

...As a new member of Twitter it seems like a great venue for businesses to market what they've got - coffee shops can promote specials or 'coffee's of the day', retailers can promote 'twitter' discounts, realtors can post blogs/listings etc. - Myspace in my opinion is #1 by far because of it's HTML & profile viewing freedom. You can really create your own "space" & keep your companies look & feel. It's easy to navigate & you have the choice to keep your profile as private or public as you want.  Realtors can showcase their listings in photo albums & in bulletins, blog and join as many groups as you want - amongst other great things!

In a nutshell I think it all just comes down to exposure!

Rochell, As the others have said, this is a great question. Let me just say I initially felt that Facebook had more potential as a business marketing tool than mySpace, but as my time with Twitter, Facebook and mySpace expands I see all of them in the same category. They are simply a way to get your name and face out there.
