When in Rome...Bowl!

By

I discovered not that long ago, a little gem of a restaurant/bar/bowling alley in what could be perceived as the "middle of nowhere" in Wisconsin. Rome (in Jefferson County) is about 45 minutes SE of Madison or about 30 minutes or less from where I live in Oconomowoc. Population is listed as about 574 people. Truly, there would be no reason for you to go through this town unless you knew someone who lived there or were out for a scenic drive. But, what I discovered a couple weeks ago was some of the most wonderful tasting food and old-fashioned bowling around. My girlfriend and her kids as well as myself and my wonderful son, met at the Bark River Bowling Alley downtown Rome. Not sure what to expect, walking in...it reminded me of the small town I grew up in in West Central Wisconsin. The Bark River was still celebrating Oktoberfest so I ordered from their "german food" specialty menu. All I can say is the "WOW" that came out of my mouth was completely unexpected. This was some of the best german food I have ever tasted and I consider myself a "foodie" as well as a Realtor. After our delicious meal, we all went to the 6-lane bowling alley which also required that we remember way back when to the days of manual scoring. The kids had a blast and the "moms" struggled through the scoring. What a refreshing way to spend a Saturday night and the bowling and shoes cost me a whole $4.00. Honestly, I felt like I had been transported into the 1970's. Anyway, maybe when I'm over that way again, I will take pictures and post it to my blog. I would highly, highly recommend checking out this place. Yes, it is out of the way. Yes it isn't fancy. But the food, hospitality and fun are excellent, affordable and refreshing. Enjoy and Happy Holidays! Terri Wonn
