O'Fallon, Missouri or O'Fallon, Illinois?

By

I've been getting confused about the cities in Missouri versus the cities in Illinois.  When someone says "O'Fallon", I can't just assume that they're talking about the "O'Fallon" in Missouri.  There is also an "O'Fallon" in Illinois.

This would be no big deal, except that "O'Fallon" is not the only name that Missouri and Illinois have in common...

They both have a city named "Troy", "Springfield", "Columbia"...need I go on..."Eureka", "Farmington"...okay.  I'll stop.

I actually counted the number of city names that Missouri and Illinois shared, and I believe that it was over 50!

I wonder if one state was copying names from the other state...  Just a thought...   :)

Debi,

Illinois is famous for copying names - some have a different pronunciation on though - there's Athens, Cairo, Philadelphia, Jacksonville, Freeport, Virginia, Berlin, Salem - just for starters. Don't forget the River you share with Illinois. :)

This reminds me of the blog I wrote about AR and AR.  AR means Arkansas.  AR also is used for Activerain.  Which came first?  Arkansas, of course.  So Activerain stole our initials!  LOL

Debi.. There are a lot of states that have the same names of cities.  Just how close are Missouri and Illinois to each other?  I don't have a map.. and it has been years since I went to school to learn geography... must have failed that class. :)

Steve - So it's Illinois doing the copying...?  I thought so.  :)

Barbara - I hadn't noticed that before...  I'll have to be careful where I use "AR"!  :)

Valerie - That's okay.  Missouri is right next to Illinois.  That's what makes it so confusing...  :)

Debi - I agree that the names can be confusing.  To add another layer of confusion, City of St. Louis and St. Louis County are both counties in Missouri.  And, is it Saint Louis or St. Louis?  Even if is St. Louis, then is it St. Louis City or City of St. Louis?  Activerain or Localism has the same confusion.  Like under City of Saint Louis (the county), it lists places like Pinelawn which are definitely St. Louis County, not St. Louis City.  I have been doing Google keyword research on what tag to use with little or no decisive information.

Ryan - I didn't even know about that other confusion.  I wonder why somebody doesn't straighten that out...   :)
