American Idol Gives Back - Fundraiser and Reflection

Services for Real Estate Pros with Zillow

I am not really an American Idol fan.  I could really care less how Sangina did his hair on the latest show.  But I tuned in tonight because they were having so many great artists perform for their Idol Gives Back special.   Amazing artists actually.

When I first tuned in, I didn't actually think I would be as moved by their causes as I was.  My husband and I already have our causes that we regularly support.  But after watching clips of how some of these impoverished people were living, it really tugged at me.  Then Josh Gorban sang You Raise Me Up, which was sung at our wedding, and I knew it was a sign and I had to give.

So why post this on a real estate website?  The places these people were living in and calling home were absolutely atrocious.  Simply unimaginable.  I felt guilty that my husband and I have recently been talking about how our 2300 sq ft 3 bedroom home is getting a little small for the two of us, when they showed a mother raising 15 HIV orphans in 12x12 room made of metal scraps.

If you want to donate, you can at www.americanidol.comand click on the donate here button.  But donations aside, it is so humbling to recognize how fortunate we are with all the resources that are available to us in the US.  After seeing the places that some of those people called home, I think we can make due in our current place for awhile longer.   We are so blessed to have this roof over our heads that provides us security and stability in so many ways.

Like you, not a huge fan... happened to have it on as I was search AR..   We are so fortunate...  I wish we all had the opportunity to visit these countries and see how we can help.   I for one am sure I could benefit from such a humbling experience.   I have often talked to my team .. saying how much I would love to be a part of such a "trip"...   makes one think.... I also donated.. i feel its the least I can do... as I lay in my bed... very comfortable.. after a night out for dinner .. laptop in place without a worry in my own life.  I can only wonder.... Thanks for the post.

Thank you for addressing this.  I think it is easy for us to forget about people in these type of circumstances as we get busy in our own lives and it's not staring us in the face.

Sara.... I am not a big fan of American Idol at times either. It's not reality, because they are out for most viewers. That's how they make their money. Please, don't take this the wrong way. I didn't watch it, but I would be leery with certain TV shows, companies, etc etc from on TV. You really need to do your research when giving money to people. Trust me, it's great that you bring this up, but I also want to educate people. I can;t think of the exact charity, but it was one on TV for a long time. When you could send money in and adapt a kid as a pen pal?  In any case, it was later discovered that a certain percentage went to those kids. In all honesty, I would give to those charities that have been proven. My mom and dad are a big believer in this also. They give....but to trusted charities.

In any case... again, I think this is very thoughtful and I hope I didn't come across negative.

On another note... sorry that I missed your 1st featured blog. But Congrats on your 2nd and for reaching out to others....

Thought I'm not really an American Idol fan, I wanted to see the speech that Bono made tonight -- if anyone has a link to an online version of the appearance, please post a link here.

I'd also encourage everyone to sign the One campaign -

Sara -  I'm glad that a profit making machine like A.I. is using their popularity to give back.  But in some ways Jeff is right. I used to work at a non-profit as a fundraising Director and found that while we pushed people locally to help, a small percentage actually stayed in their community.  A large portion went to a big national "pot".  From there, THEY make the decision about where it goes, after skimming from the top to go to administrative fees.  Of course admin fees are necessary to run the business, but you won't believe the money some of the top dogs make.  Donating is great, but do the research if you care about exactly where your money goes.

I am not a fan of it either and unfortunately missed this show.  I would have loved to see them perform to help people!  And many people ARE fans and watch that show so I hope they were motivated to donate whatever they could.  Bono has been "giving back" for a long time now with his RED campaign.  I think it's wonderful....Thanks for this post.

Kelli... that's a lot of money.  I wonder where all that money will go to. Sorry, but after companies such as Enron, I am just skeptical at times. As Pete mentioned, people can be greedy and I just question if all that money will be accounted for. I guess I am just so hung up on all of the scams out there. And from reading these comments, as I once said before, just be careful on these types of charities. .... even if they are in the public eye.
