Google maps adds a new layer for video - but does it work?

Services for Real Estate Pros with | Nashua Video Tours

Google announced that it has integrated YouTube videos into Google Maps as a new layer.  Videos are now showing up when clicking on the "more" button in the upper right, alongside the Wikipedia and Panoramic photo options.  If you select the "video" option, thumnails of geotagged YouTube videos are added to the map and the videos can be viewed on the main page with an info window that is smaller than the typical YouTube video window.

Prior to this, videos could only be found within Google maps when clicking on “photos & more” within a marked location.

That's great!  Except......

I have yet to figure out what the criteria (beyond geo-tagging) that is being used to show these videos.  I have hundreds of videos on YouTube, all geo tagged with the address, the city and town are all within the description, and yet - NONE show up on Google maps!  The only videos that appear seem to be of the homemade "stupid variety" that one regularly finds on YouTube (people jumping out of boats, videos of kids, etc.)

I checked a dozen of my videos and NONE appeared - anywhere.

So, what does this mean for video marketing and video search engine optimization? The answer is clear. Since there is now a new option to discover videos within Google maps, it is important that you leverage YouTube to drive traffic to your videos.  If this actually does begin to work - think about it - many MLS systems have Google Maps attached to the MLS listing!

The potential is amazing, but so far I have yet to figure out "how" it works!

Nashua Video Tours is New England's oldest and largest real estate video tour company, having produced over 700 real estate video tours for New Hampshire, Massachusetts and the metro Boston area.  In addition to branded (with your logo and contact info) and unbranded (for the MLS) videos, we also upload your video to a DOZEN video sharing sites, such as YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video and more.

Nice find Fred.  Surely your town intro videos would be a perfect fit.  I wonder if the search discounts professional videos....

great point, I have the same question about Picassa.  When you click the "photos" option on google maps it takes you to pics on, instead of picassa.  I have tons of pics on picassa that I would like to show up there.  Will I have to transfer a lot over to panoramio now?

Incidentally, one of my youtube videos shows up on google maps, but none of my home tours.  I will go in to make sure that they are geocoded in youtube

Hi Fred -

I went in and tried to play with it, but it is not well documented, and I left confused.  Maybe we just have to give the Google guys a little more time to fill in all the details.  Thanks for tipping us off anyway!

So zip codes in tags, street address to come up with the google maps images that the google van did in the neighborhoods is now key?

Andrew:  Not really sure WHAT the key is... still trying to figure that out!  YouTube is scrambling right now - they are trying really hard to make it viable and to monetize it, so they are going through LOTS of major changes in the past few months (high quality... then high definition.... widescreen format....  including studio movies and shows.... annotations, etc)

Google "killed" Google Video the other day, and will now concentrate all of their efforts on YouTube, so I'm sure all of this will come into a clearer picture in the coming months....
