A Bit of Common Courtesy

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Allegiance, Managing Broker/Branch Vice President

With Winter either here or coming soon in many parts of the country, this is just a little reminder to buyer's agents, homebuyers, and other visitors.  Listing agents and homeowners everywhere will appreciate your common courtesy*:

ATTENTION AGENTS & POTENTIAL HOMEBUYERS:

PLEASE KINDLY REMOVE YOUR SHOES WHEN VIEWING OUR HOME.

THANK YOU!

Nobody wants snow, slush, ice, mush, mud, and other nasty stuff ruining a perfectly beautiful home for sale.

* Agents, Brokers, and buyers in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, Hawaii, and other sunny spots, please feel free to ignore this message.

We've still got snow on the ground from the last storm on Sunday, I'm sure our seller's and listing agents would appreciate a posted notice like this!

I hate it when you have an open house and someone walks in and tracks water everywhere and you step in it and your socks get wet.  That's horrible.

Hi Brian~ Sometimes Common Courtesy is NOT so common.  I think we should print these and place them in our listings just in case.....

Dear Brian,

Good simple advice. I am sure that sign could stay up in some areas for several months. It would also be great for the rainy season in some areas.

Warning to agents--wear socks without holes that match!

That is a great idea, for my homes I have to put a sign near the doors to please make sure to turn off lights and secure doors.

Even here in Sunny Florida, shoes are off at our door. I have kept my shoes off, a custom I learned in Hawaii and Japan and loved it so much, kept it when I moved back state side. I had a saying at my front door,  Welcome to our home, please remove your shoes and stay awhile.

Hahah...I was just going to say that we ALWAYS take our shoes off...no matter what time, day, home etc. My mom used to make me wash my feet before going in the door.

Brian, not only am I going to tromp through your house with my wet, sloppy shoes on but I'm going to pop on your freakin' gas "fireplace", plop down on your freakin' sofa, and put my feet up with a drink in hand until you get home!

You think common courtesy but that is how some people live.  I have had buyers refuse to go into a house because there was a sign asking them to remove thier shoes.  Go figure.

Brian, this explains it!  Coming from California where we didn't have much weather and now in North Carolina where it's not a big deal, I have observed that all my buyers from the Northeast and Midwest automatically take their shoes off when viewing a home.  Now I know why...:)

And Turn Off The Lights and Lock The Doors!!!!  I'm  tired of going to one of our vacant listings and finding our doors open and lights on.

Thank you...It is common courtesy.  Maybe having those saran wrap looking footies at  the door would be  a clue:-)

I agree 100%. When I lived in NY, we wore our shoes/sneakers all throughout the house. I moved to NC 8 years ago and saw that people removed their shoes in theirs and others' homes and we adopted this policy in our home as well. If you think about it, we step in all kinds of things outside, not always visible to the naked eye, and then we track it in. EEEWWWW!

First snow last night for us in Northern New Jersey so this is very appropriate.   As a corollary to this, Realtors, make sure you start wearing your socks without the holes in them if you are going to be taking off your shoes!
