Lifes little lessons on Facebook

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Meridian Valley

So a couple of months ago I was talking with some tech people in our industry and they suggested I join Active Rain, Linkedin and Facebook.  My first thought about facebook was I can't do that my kids will be so annoyed.  I have a 22 year old son  who just graduated from WSU and an 18 year old daughter attending her Freshman year at WSU so obviously facebook is their social network.  I made a vow to myself I wouldn't ask them or any of their friends to be in my network.  Next thing I know they somehow see that I have joined and alot of them have sent me friend requests...well anyway I was playing around on facebook last week and became a fan of oh lets say about 50 different things....doritos, laptops, coca-cola,etc.  Well what I didn't realize was this posted out there for everyone to see and my son came to me last night and said "Mom you look kind of dumb being a fan of everything whats up with that?"  I told him I thought I was just checking off  things I liked, I didn't realize that it showed every single item on my profile and everyone could see it.  Well he showed me how to chang things last night  so now I am not a fan of everything and learned I really need to know what I am doing on facebook before I start checking boxes off.  Alot to learn on all these social networking sites...I guess its just trial and error.  I just thought I would share this funny little story I learn something new everyday, and my kids definately let me know if I am doing the wrong thing on facebook.  Have a great Holiday!!Christmas Tree

I'm not into Facebook yet either.  I've found that I can't do it all and that one hasn't hit my priority list yet.  A fellow agent said her daughter was shocked to find her mom's picture on Facebook.  I guess she thought it was just for kids.

Hi Laurie!
I joined Facebook, LinkedIn, and Trulia along with AR.  I have found LinkedIn to not be very interesting.  Trulia is interesting, but WAY more difficult to navigate than AR.  I am enjoying Facebook, but strictly as a social page.  I am too unsure of myself to do much other than find friends and do some wall postings.  I do have fun seeing who I am linked to. I too have a son who is 23...and since he is a friend, I get to see who his friends are. I know most of them because I use to coach his soccer team...but it is always interesting!

Hi Laurie-

I have 2 teenagers and yes they were annoyed when I joined FACEBOOK.  They have tried to show me the ropes.  They have even given me pointers on texting & what's acceptable & what's not.

I am thankful that I have them to show me the ropes.

I am not a big fan of Facebook but I keep getting friend requests from people I know who are on there. I agree that LinkedIn is not very exciting but I guess it could be. Nothing seems as interesting or works as well for me as AR has.

AR and FB both seem to work well for our industry, However LI seems to be great to connect to business owners and top-level managers, and to some extent provides additional visibility and credibility. I have three 20-somethings, 2 of which are on FB. As soon as I got comfortable navigating FB, I decided to remove myself from both of their friend's list, and they both joined my marketing & sales group. I was shocked! The good thing about it is they both say they enjoy receiving the information that I send out to group members!
