Moving? If you plan to hire professional movers, you are likely to hear some terms that may not be familiar to you. Here are some moving terms that you may encounter:

  • Long haul - any move that is longer than 450 miles.
  • Tare weight - the weight of the truck and its contents prior to your belongings being loaded.
  • Gross weight - the weight of the truck after your belongings are loaded.
  • Net weight - the weight of your belongings. This figure is calculated by subtracting the tare weight from the gross weight.
  • Attic - the overhead space located over the cab of most moving trucks.
  • Deadhead - when a mover is traveling in an unloaded truck in order to pick up a paying load.
  • Warehouse handling - a fee that will be added if your belongings have to be removed from or placed in temporary storage.
  • Flight charge - an extra fee for carrying large, bulky or awkward items (like a piano) up or down stairs.
  • Bill of lading - the formal contract between the moving company and you. It will also serve as a receipt for your belongings.
  • Binding estimate - a guaranteed price given in writing that is based on an itemized list of items that are to be moved, the distance that will be traveled, and the services that will be provided.
  • Non-binding estimate - an estimate provided before the move that does not guarantee the final bill. The final cost will be calculated on the weight of your belongings, the total distance, and the services provided.
