I've Been Schmoozed!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Re/Max Plus

I've been in the real estate business for over two years now. I'm used to bankers, inspectors, contractors, attorneys, and other vendors wanting to introduce themselves and show me the value they can provide. As a matter of fact, I welcome it. I'm always looking for new vendors that can offer my clients the best service.

This past spring, I referred a client to a particular attorney for the first time. I had never even met him, but his office had sent me a brochure. My client was simply looking for the lowest priced attorney I knew of, and that was him. The closing went smoothly, but nothing about the attorney's service stood out to me, so I went back to giving clients my usual list of attorneys who I knew were excellent at communication (my pet peeve!).

gift basketToday, I went into the office and there was a gift basket on my desk from that attorney's office. It was the biggest, most elaborate gift basket I've ever received! There was sparkling cider, coffees, hot cocoas, cookies, chocolates, snacks, and more, and it was all presented wonderfully. It must have cost them around $50. For referring one client, that's not bad!

Would I ever refer a client to this attorney again? If they're looking for a discount attorney, sure I would. He did a good job keeping himself and his office at the top of my mind. But here's the big question... could he have accomplished the same thing with a signed, self-addressed holiday card? It would have showed his appreciation. Did he really need to shell out mucho bucks for gigantic baskets? Personally, it didn't make me any more likely to send clients his way.

This is a question that affects my own marketing, too. I try to be as economical as possible with my purchases, especially in the current economy. I make sure I show my clients my appreciation, but I certainly don't send anything this grand. I tend to get small items that fit their personalities, or write notes I think would make them smile. Is that any less memorable? I hope not.

In the end, I hope it's the thought that makes the difference. It's great to be schmoozed, but there are more important things in life. Let's be remembered for the things we do, not the things we buy.

Sheila, thanks for your response. I'm sure your cards were much appreciated!

Russ, I certainly respect that line of thinking. You're right, there's no denying something big and pricey makes a statement!

Tammy, I hope the magazine gives you something nice!! And normally I either get a card or nothing from attorneys! This was unexpected!

Mini, thanks for your thoughts. You're right, it's a plus to get something nice, but it's the service that matters most.

Marilyn, point taken! I was honestly curious to see what others said about this. You're right, I certainly won't forget him now.

Kate, thanks! I do swear by personal notes. I hope you end up using yours soon!

Clark, good point. And I am thankful... it was very appreciated. I guess it just got me questioning what matters most!

Beth, I'm sure your clients do appreciate the gifts very much! Maybe I'm just too poor to buy them and am rationalizing!

Tim, great point about reaching out to my sphere! I did show it to everyone who was in the office today!

Wow that is a great little present and nice for like you said just one referral. I like being smoozed from time to time too but they really have to offer service and not just a great basket for me to refer them to clients.

I think it shows an element of class. They obviously appreciated your referral. Not so shabby for a discount attorney.

I like the concept........those big expensive gifts do get everyone's attention though.  A builder sent me flowers last fall when I sold one of his homes and then had his sale's manager hand deliver a very nice Christmas present to me at my office a month later.  It was memorable!  I was wishing I had sold some of his new constructions this year! Elaborate gifts get NOTICED.   Nothing like a little honesty!  Sincere appreciation gets noticed too....even in the form of a handwritten note.

Kristen,

You make an excellent point. The size of a gift basket should not influence our decisions who to refer clients to. It should be the results they produce, the professionalism.

I would rather they do a good job and charge my client a fair price than try and wow me with gifts.

Kristen,

I think both actually.  A personal handwritten note with a sincere message of appreciation accompanied by a quality gift.  The note says thanks for doing such a great job for my clients and the gift (usually I give a big Nordstrom gift card) is something they can enjoy personally.  This entire business is about giving great service both ways and building relationships with top quality partners.

Heather, amen to that! Both and I'm all for it!

Kathy, you're right. Every client is precious, now more than ever!

Ellie, yes, it was very classy. That's true.

Linda, there's no doubt gifts like that get noticed. I'm glad you think there's a place for both!

Esko, that's just the point I was trying to get across. Thanks for the comment.

Rich, I agree completely. They do a good job for me and I'm happy to refer them!

Gary, I think your idea sounds like the best of both worlds. Thanks for the insight.

Angelia, I agree. I certainly wouldn't turn down the gifts!

And I so often hear people say, "Would you shop for a discount attorney?" The answer, of course, is yes, depending on the circumstances.

Remember that he was the lowest priced attorney but he sent you a big basket. I think that says something -- he understands marketing.

You are correct.  It is the things you do, not the things you buy. Well thought out posting.

Russell, very true. That's something most full-price attorneys don't do!

Evelyn, well put. Thanks for the comment!

Kristen - The gifts are nice and it's good to see that someone appreciates your referral.  You are correct to continue the practice of offering a list of people that provide services when a client asks for one.  Best practices would suggest that you give them a choice.

If the closing had gone poorly he could have sent you a parrot in a cage.

Everything you cleaned the poop you would think of your deal.

Just a thought.

Kristin--

I share your dilemma.  I go back and forth about ehich is best.  In the beginning, I gave little gifts that were more personal.  Then when gas prices shot up, I started giving gas cards as client gifts and every body loved them.  In 2009, I am thinking about going back to more personal gifts based on the client's personality.  I even went so far as to revise my initial client information sheet to include favorite restaurants and client hobbies.

Great story. It would put me off a bit. A nice note would have accomplished the same thing.
