How Long Have You Been With Your Current Brokerage?

By

How long have you been with your current brokerage?

How loyal are agents in general to thier Brokers? I am just curious how long you have been with your broker. If you have changed in the past what caused you to make the change? Was it a pay issue with your commissions? Personality conflict? Did they go out of business? Better commission structure. More or less training? Communication problems? I am not sure how many solicitations I get a month with Brokers trying to lure me away. Does your broker supply you with what you need? I am looking forward to your opinions. Thanks, in advance.

Randy,

I'm a firm believer that most agents join "Companies" and leave "Managers." Most agents I see who have left have done so because of some presumed conflict with the manager. Commission splits aren't that different between companies. Of course the current market has caused agents to leave because they can no longer support themselves in a real estate career.

I have listened to the pitch of many agencies. Some have been very pushy. Keller Williams in particular turned me off by continuing to call, e-mail and snail mail after I said "No Thank-You"

I have not had a reason to move. That and I'm too lazy.

I was with my previous company for 12 years and left to join a new one this past April.  I felt it was getting too corporate and I was not getting the support I needed.  I am so happy with my new company & my manager and think it was the best business decision I've made.  More support, positive attitude, tons of training, huge team attitude within the office....overall just a better place to be.

I know I left one because their business plan changed. When I joined, I had to prepare a list of transactions I had listed and closed because the broker only wanted experienced people with a "booj of business"

Two years later he was bringing in anyone who had a license and could fog a mirror. Working there became difficult becasue you spent half you time being bothered with basic questions from people wgo had never written a contract or listed a property.

And I agree qith Rich above, you join the brokerage and leave the management.

Randy,

In the almost 13 years in business, I've been with 4 different brokerages.  Started at C-21 franchise, which was a great place to start with training from the company and from the wonderful agents who worked there...very patient and ready to mentor this newbie.

Next went to an ERA franchise.  Loved it at first and still love many of the agents who continue to work there, but a shift in policy and a personality conflict caused me to rethink my plan and move on to Long & Foster.

Absolutely loved working there for several years.  During the boom time, it was the place to be.  As the market began its ugly downward spiral, things became difficult.  A major conflict with how to deal with some loyal clients made me, for the FIRST time ever, think about opening a brokerage of my own.

2 1/2 years later, my business partner and I know that we made the right decision to go our own way.  We've been courted by Coldwell Banker and Keller Williams, and while both organizations have much to offer, we really can't imagine not calling the shots on our own now.  We looked into purchasing several different franchises, but ultimately decided that wasn't the way we wanted to go.  Leading Edge Properties was born, and we now have 4 great agents working with us.  We couldn't be happier!

I started out with Coldwell Banker with NO "new agent" support from the boker or office manager. I left after 6 months to go with a local Realty World office. More support from the broker and more training. Unfortunately, the broker was about to go broke. After 6 months, he merged with my old Coldwell Banker office and I went along. It lasted for 6 months, then the Coldwell Banker office went broke. I'm not kidding you! I packed my stuff and hung my license with another broker (ERA), who had just built a brandnew 7,000 sqft office building. No financial problems! My old Coldwell Banker office stayed open through a miracle; another local Coldwell Banker broker "bought" the office. As of today, the doors are still open. Despite numerous recruiting attempts, I had no desire to go back and worry about another "Dear Agents, due to the economic conditions..." - speech.

I'm happy where I am. My husband got licensed in June 2008 and I wanted to make sure that he didn't have to go through switching offices every 6 months like I did. Our broker is great! The commission split is great, support and tools are plentyful and we have a wonderful working atmosphere. We have all the latest tech stuff in the office. Our broker pays for mag advertising and he's bending over backwards to help agents with transactions or putting deals together.

Hubby and I received numerous recruiting emails, calls and letters from other brokerages, Keller Williams being the most persistant but we have no reason to leave. Even a higher commission split wouldn't change my mind!

Gene and I have been with Coldwell Banker United since 1995 in Austin in the NW office. I would not consider a move. I love our manager! She is the most incredible. We are a top producing office with a variety of agent personalities and styles (many have been with our office at least as long as we have and many more). Vanessahas a unique way of pushing each of us to become the best we can. She offers us an enormous amount of support and encouragement. We have so many toolsto work with through Coldwell Banker (great Internet sites - local & national, marketing material, education classes etc. All are designed to help you attain your goals. It amazes me agents who don't take advantage of all thefree marketing materials! But it always comes back to those who want to work and those want to sit and hope the phone rings! We get what we give!

7 years ago when I left the company at which I had worked for 9 years - I opened my own brokerage in 2001.  (Licensed in 1979, I started working full time in real estate after college in 1982 and I believe I have held only 5 positions during all that time - mainly as marketing directors and marketing vice presidents of development and construction companies).

More than 3/4 of my staff are licensed brokers so they have the option of working for themselves but choose to work with me.  The agents I have that are not brokers include 1 with a GRI that is extremely experienced and sat the county planning and zoning commission 2 terms and 1 with an undergraduate from Clemson in Marketing.   So my licensees are both an experienced, educated and well rounded but small in number because I don't want bodies, I want a team.

I started 12 years ago with Weichert and stayed there for 9 yrs.  I have been with my current broker, Long and Foster for 3 yrs.  I left my former broker because I wanted to start a team. My manager is always there if I need her and not there in my face if I don't.  I also get many recruiting calls and like Amy have no desire to leave with the support, technology, etc from L&F

Randy, I have been with REMax for 3 years. Prior to that I was with a very small company with an average of 4 agents and working primarily on new construction. I grew tired of the office and the new construction and wanted to step up sales of existing homes.

Thank you all, the responses have been so interesting to this post. Sounds as though if you look around and find a brokerage that fits your style and they are financially sound people will stay with them for a long time.

Norma,

Exit has been qutie agressive in my area as well. I get alot of emails from agents advertising thier listings and it looks like they have some great products to aid the agents with thier listings.

Richard,

Sounds like a pretty acurate opinion judging from the othere responses here.

Ellie,

Sounds to me like the team concept works well for you. Is it the team or the brokerage that keeps you happiest? Just curious.

Laura J,

Sounds like a good idea to keep that relationship.

Laura K,

I'm curious what kept you there as long as you were. I guess it is hard at most times to make a change with current listings and licensing and all. Also changing out business cards signs email addresses. If you brand yourself and own all of those things that would be alot easier.

Fred,

Thanks, sounds like you have experienced the extremes or at least major change and different styles.
