PORT CHARLOTTE HIGH SCHOOL WINS HONORS AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL MODEL UN CONFERENCE

Charlotte County schools are in the news again. Recently, Port Charlotte High School Model United Nations Team have been recognized on a local and national level for academic achievement. Here's the gist from the article in The Charlotte Sun newspaper of December 19, 2008. If you saw the movie "The Great Debaters" you will appreciate this story.

Members of the PCHS Model United Nations Team won the best small school delegation last week at Harvard University International UN Conference. 130 schools from around the globe participated with 3,000 students competing. The subject they debated and won was, "a solution to global sanitation crisis".  Their victory was huge because of the stiff competition from mostly private schools.

There is always good news to share from this part of the world. Come on down where the sun is always shining. It's mid 70's today, too warm for snow. And, there are incredible opportunities to buy that Florida Lifestyle you have wanted and thought you would never afford. Come on down. I would be happy to show you my back yard. www.nancyelliott.com

As a parent from across the river (Charlotte High), let me offer my congratulations.

Charlotte County truly has some remarkable schools despite the naysayers who ridicule Florida education. Charlotte High is rising from the rubble of Hurricane Charley to truly become a model for the new century. I recently attended the open day for parents of Punta Gorda Middle Schoolers who will be transitioning to Charlotte High in the next academic year, and was amazed at the technology and opportunities available to the new generation of High Schooler in Charlotte County. Edison Community College is becoming Edison State College and will offer a High School program which will confer graduates of its program an Associates Degree upon HIGH SCHOOL graduation. Other programs are available which partner with Charlotte Technical Center and offer super vocational choices - all within the county. The choices are incredible, the facilities are state of the art, the educators are exceptional! As the parent of a Charlotte High graduate, a soon-to-be graduate, and a middle-schooler soon to be in Charlotte High, I am proud of Charlotte County education.

When I moved here some twelve years ago, Florida education was considered something of a joke. Today, thanks to changing attitudes and commitments, relocating parents don't need to be concerned about the education opportunities in Charlotte County - they truly abound!

Let me join Nancy in welcoming newcomers to our warm climes - the educational opportunities are great - come in and feel the warmth!

Thank you Michael for adding a positive comment to my blog about Charlotte County Schools. I drove by the new Charlotte High School a couple of days ago and was amazed how far along the construction has come. What a stunning campus it is going to be, a wonderful mix of restored original with a complimenting addition. We are indeed fortunate to have such fine schools in our county.
