Downturn Can Be a Plus For Homeowners

TIME FOR HOME REPAIR?

The current economic downturn  offers  some excellent opportunities for homeowners.  Builders who can't sell the last home or two they built on speculation (Spec Houses)  in Shell Knob, are probably not starting to build more until one of the homes sell.

carpenterThis puts many skilled craftsmen (and some not so skilled - let's be honest) with time on their hands and no income.  This might just be the perfect time for Mr. & Mrs. Homeowner to do some home improvements.

Personally, I just had three of my outdoor doors replaced on my 23 year old Shell Knob home.  Hail storms last spring resulted in my insurance company supplying a new roof. It's just normal wear and tear that requires updating.  It did however provide my favorite contractor with work and income.

Last year you would have been put on a waiting list to get a builder to come by and give you an estimate.  It's now whole other story.

Builders and their crews are welcoming any work they can get right now.  If you've been putting off having some painting or plumbing done, it might be an excellent time to place a few calls and get estimates.

Thanks Eloise.  Yes, that's right.  Employ someone and put money (badly needed) back into the economy.

Joan, always thinking aren't you?  My wife brought home some window sealers that have helped a lot since putting them in, they were cheap, fit into the window frame, and stopped cold air flow and the whistling that we always heard when the wind was blowing strongly.  Know they paid for themselves already as the weather we have been having has really proven her one smart cookie for buying them.  Good investments in your home are always a great idea, good post my friend and happy new year in 2009 to you!

Joan, you are very true. A friend who is a good builder used to have one year's schedule on building project. This past Sept, he had begun to sell some of his properties to prepare for the uncertainty.

Joan,

Thanks for sharing this information.  I have a friend in LA who is a handyman and his personal business is up right now.

Take care and I hope you have a prosperous 2009.

Steve - you silver tongued devil you - good to hear from you.  Oh we put money  back into the economy all right - whew - did we!  Am putting off plans to get a 'new to me' car.

The doors are a real update.  Love the feel of closing them and the storm doors have made big improvements with the disappearing screens.  I'm also enjoying more light in my utility room.  Amazing the difference the doors make.  Now all I've got to do is sell  some property to be able to buy that car!

Huiting:  Yes, the builders I know are looking for any small (or large) jobs they can do.  The days of being able to have enough work to plan a year ahead are gone

Kelly:  We have  alot of Handymen in the Ozarks, due to a large portion of our population being retirees.  I would imagine that the number available now has doubled.

Welcome aboard Craig.  I've had 2 or 3  clients from your area.  If you haven't made it physically down here yet, you will find Table Rock Lake is much cleaner and less populated than Lake of the Ozarks.  Be glad to coop a referral
