Athletes and Their Whopper Contracts...I Challenge You!

By
Real Estate Agent with Surterre Properties

The size of compensation packages for athletes has always been a sore point for me. This last week had some whopper contracts dealt out...$180 million here and $160 million there... to go out and play some baseball for a few years (I think the contracts ran 6 or 8 years).

This particularly annoys me when people are struggling and slipping into a financial tailspin that a meager portion of these big league contracts could solve.

Here is another point...and I am totally serious here.  If you had no bills to worry about, no school to attend and no job to go to... and I gave you a full time trainer and you worked out every day (OK, you can rest at times with a day or two off) and all you did was train at a particular position in a particular sport I challenge anyone to tell me differently that you couldn't play at the professional level in athletics...you name it: soccer, hockey, swimming, diving, football, baseball.  I know that an average person can be trained to professional status without all the baggage that we all carry around.

HERE IS THE CHALLEGE TO COCA COLA, POWERADE, GATORADE...ANYONE: I am 56 years old, 5' 10" and 180 pounds...I have retained reasonable athletic skill.  And I challenge any corporation to sponsor my bills and overhead, while taking me to professional dieticians and trainers and I think I can play at the professional level.   If I can do it, I'll reimburse them for all the carrying expenses while I trained - and I'll pay them from the lucrative sports contract I will sign.

Mike - You hit on a question I asked myself awhile back.  If I were younger, and had a clean slate, I'd definitely learn to bounce that ball - or continue bouncing it until I did :-)

Mike --  Those are some crazy contracts and the entertainment/music industry boggles the mind too.  Is any actor really worth 50M in one year?

This has bothered me for some time too!  It is a crime the amount of money they get paid to do something that most people would gladly do for free.  So much suffering and struggling for so many other people, just isn't right.

I love your challenge!  How exciting if someone took you up on it.  I'm hoping you get a bite and make it to the big time!

I'm with you Michael. I watch sports on television, but I haven't been to a sports event in more than 10 years, probably since the Michael Ray Richardson fiasco in basketball. Michael Vick didn't do anything to encourage me to go back. Just because people might make a lot of money doesn't mean they are smart. Heck, Bush and the Wall Street smarties have proven that over the past eight years.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2009.

This always bothered me. When I was young I was an RN, working in the ICU and literally saving lives all the time. Yet I was making about $8.00/ hr, working the evening shift, holidays, weekends, etc. (no double time or overtime for holidays).  So why were athletes making so many milliions.? Whose contribution to society was greater?

I will admit though that there is a talent that  you have to be born with, but it doesn't deserve that much pay.

an athlete

Its funny to me that you people sit here and bash athletes and entertainers about the size of their contracts, saying that a portion of their monies would alleviate some of the financial strain the average person is facing. This is true, any extra money would help me out. But I find it disturbing that the focus here is on these athletes and the millions they earn and not the CEOs and executives of these major companies. In 2008, the top 5 highest paid athletes in the world accumulated a total of $240 million, while the top 5 executives at Goldman Sachs (one compnay) totaled $242 million. Who is making too much money? It is also ridiculous to think that the average person, regardless of training and experience, could play any sport on the professional level. People who think this is possible, obviously have never stepped on the field, court, ice, or diamond and competed at a high level. I hope image does not play a part in why most people think this way about pro athletes.
