If YOU Don't Accommodate Your Client, Someone Else WILL

Thinking today about one of Katerina Gasset's post, she mentioned the fact that she never works on Sunday.  I was impressed.  I DO work on Sunday because most of my clients work all week and don't want to take a day off for a Feng Shui Consultation.

It especially made me think because I had just booked an appointment for THIS Sunday.  I realize many people wait longer to actually pick up the phone and schedule an appointment.  Some are put off by prices or just by conflicts of wondering whether a Feng Shui Consultation will help them.  My New York Feng Shui clients range from true skeptics to those that absolutely KNOW it WORKS.

Still, they can find those phone calls daunting.  No doubt they will want to speak to a few Feng Shui Consultants to find the one they are most comfortable with...in the methods they chose and a general feeling of the energy that comes across over the phone.  My call today was unexpected-my potential client asked if I could come first thing tomorrow morning.

I was not able to accommodate their request and offered him a date in January.  "You don't understand" he told me, "I want one NOW."  Sunday I was booked as well but knew these people could probably be a bit more flexible in the time.  I called them to see if I could make it later then originally scheduled and they were fine with the idea.  I was also fortunate:  Both of my Feng Shui clients are not only in Manhattan, they are BOTH in Times Square!

I could have easily turned this prospective client down....but I do know the feeling of having put off something I KNOW I need to do and then wanting it done as soon as possible.  I also knew that if I didn't do the consultation THIS WEEKEND, he would find someone who would.

Katerina's and my circumstances are different.  My children are grown and my daughter, Laura Cerrano works with me while Katerina still has a little one around.  But it made me wonder:

Carole--While I respect those who set boundaries, I stay away from statements like, I never work on..... or a certain time of day. There are times where flexiblity is necessary. My family comes first, but at times flexiblility pays the bills. Knowing what works best for you is the important thing.

BTW...Hope your Christmas was wonderful! :)

Carole- There is a realtor here that will not take any calls on Sunday.  So if I want to show his listing on Monday. . . well I can't.  In fact he doesn't work weekends.  I try to have my family time but if someone calls me to set up a showing . .it only takes 5 minutes!

I will work on weekends, but I do set boundaries. If I have a previous engagement with family or friends I keep it. I think we need to consider our own needs in order to have a well balanced life. If I had an appointment with a client I wouldn't cancel that, so other clients/potential clients needs to understand when I am simply not available.  Dropping everything to be at someone's beck and call will only make it more difficult for us in the long wrong.

Mel, I have to be flexible as well---I often find when they finally make a decision to call they want it now.  If it's not too difficult to re-arrange something I will.

Pat, Thank you, I try my best to accomodate my clients.  And a VERY Happy New Year to YOU!  My blessings to everyone for the BEST New Year ever!

Mike, No day is off limits for me, either.  I know my clients have jobs and commitments and usually work on weekends.  If I can be there at their convenience, I will.

Kathy, I don't work at night either...mostly because the blessings are supposed to be done between certain hours.  Some people aren't aware of that and I know many consultants will do evening appointments but I won't.

Erby, I loved the way you put it.  I do my best but of course have certain times I cannot be "on call."  But if I can go, I will try to fit their schedule.

Kathy, It can be difficult--this person wasn't trying to be, however.  They are experiencing things they want taken care of sooner rather then later---and my other appointment was easier to change.  If I can't do it, I will refer someone who I believe is qualified and honest.

Michelle, I am surprised to hear that Brook is not now available on weekends at all...which would make it difficult if a Stager has another job and only works weekends.....I know you are full time but some aren't and have the weekends for their business.  I try to accomodate a client whenever I can.

Carol, That is a frightening story and you should do a post about it to warn people.  I did get a call once from a client who would ONLY meet me in front of a builing in NYC---and only give me a cell number.  I turned him down because I didn't feel safe at ALL.

Bill, He sounded like he needed help and did not want to wait.  Since they were close I called my other client to see if they could make it later.  It was no problem for them and I'm glad I will be able to accomodate both of them.

Dena, I like that phone message :)  I was able to (after checking with my other client) and glad to be able to do both.  If my other client needed to keep the same hours as originally planned, I would not have been able to go.

Tom, I usually only have two days, most of my clients can't make it during the week.  If I can't do it because my weekends are booked, I will offer them a weekday.  They can decide if they want someone else or be willing to wait.  I hope you had a wonderful birthday!

Joddie, This was not that difficult to change....a change in schedule and we need to try to accomodate our clients if we can.  Sometimes I can't---this one worked out well.

Joan, I agree with you, birthdays and holidays are out.  So are the personal days I've set aside (such as concerts and plays).  Otherwise I will see what I can do to work with them.

Gayle, On hearing his difficulties, I could understand why he didn't want to wait.  And things were easily changed thanks to my other client.  For me also I don't usually do two consults in one day--but again, exceptions are made.

Gary, Well put!  If I can change things without too much difficulty I will try....I've missed your posts, glad to see one tonight.

Laurie, Best to YOU in 1009 too!  You'll be fine with it if he makes a sale I believe :)  It's a changing market all around and I am rethinking things myself for the New Year.

Teri, Well put.  It depends on what I can do and family DOES come first but I work most Sundays...it's always been that way so I guess I'm used to it.  Christmas was a little sad but we all were there for my mom and that meant a lot to her.  I hope yours was wonderful.

Tami, I know a realtor here that will go anytime, day or night and any day.  And another who is flexible with her clients.....but not a ONE that doesn't work ANY weekends!  That's actually the first time I've heard that--I wonder how they can help people when it's such a strict schedule.

Jenny, I agree with you but if I can change things around easily enough, I will try.  This person wasn't being demanding and I should have put that in the post.  He has been experiencing issues and wants to get them resolved.  Hopefully I can see exactly what's wrong.

Carole in life we need to be flexible.  By offer this potential client an option you found out it was possible to accommodate him.  Asking the right questions makes all the difference,

Carole, I too try to be very flexible for my clients.  The only time I say No is when I have plans with my family.  I don't show properties in the evenings unless it's a client I've already been working with.  Last year, about this time, I received a call from a man who insisted that we look at only vacant homes only in the evenings.  I said NO!

Absoluately true and so is that you should select your clients as you would a friend.

What I've found over the years is that people who are serious about buying take the time to schedule appointments, which we do ahead of time and they are on my calendar.  The folks who call from in front of a house and have to see it "right now" are usually tire kickers or have another agent that wouldn't drop everything.  Those are the ones that I refuse to rearrange my schedule for.  Other than that, I'm extremely accommodating of my client's schedules and will do everything I can to make sure they are taken care of.

Jennifer, I did it--I'm tired and it was a long day but certainly an interesting one!

Judi, Someone else commented about meeting at night....be VERY careful.  I don't do consultations at night and turned one down when I was contacted to only meet the man outside his "building" in NYC.

Janice, It's funny, many of my clients become my friends.  It doesn't end at the consult--we are in touch after and often times just become friends.

Lisa, I had the feeling this particular client had felt he'd put it off too long already; since I was able to change things I did.  It was a very interesting consultation with some wonderful people.

There are no emergencies in my life. That being said I take Sundays off as well so it would have to be an out of state buyer, referral or past client that absolutely couldn't do it anyother time. I had a buyer that wanted to see homes on Thanksgiving day and I told them I couldn't and they went to another agent that would and that was fine with me.

Carole, you are right on track in saying that if you do not accomadate your client, then someone else will. I guess that is why we keep the 8 am to midnight hours Monday through Saturday.

Carole ~ Prior to becoming pregnant and subsequently having my daughter, I would book an appointment anytime - even last minute. Now, my time is much more sacred. I try to leave Sundays open, however I will book appointments if that is what my clients really needs. I do not however book last minute appointments on Sunday any more. I do have partners though, so if one of us cannot make an appointment, we can usually coordinate with one of my partners to accomodate our clients! ~A:)

Carole - sometimes you just have to say no ... knowing they will find someone else if you do not beat them to the punch and reffer them to someone else.

Charles, Thanksgiving is precious to me as well---I would not be working on that day.  But my clients are home on Sundays and to make it easier for them, I don't mind if I can do the job.

Danny, I get more requests for weekends because my clients work...and I don't work at night because it's not well aspected to do the blessings.  I don't mind but maybe that's because I'm used to it.

Jo, I know they will find someone more flexible if you can't meet their hours....I probably would as well!   In NYC, there are hundreds of Feng Shui Consultants--I'd rather be working :)

Alisha, It's difficult without a partner and after reading your post, I don't blame you. Children grow up WAY too fast--but mine are grown and my daughter works with me!  It's still family day :)

Kathy, Thankfully I could re-arrange things without much trouble at all....and was glad I got to work with these people, they were lovely.

I think your schedule depends on what your motivations are for being in real estate.  If it is largely career and income-driven, then I think you can easily work 24/7.  If your motivation is to carve out a life for you and be able to afford to be comfortable, but not necessarily wealthy, you can set boundaries and afford to lose a few clients.

My husband and I have decided recently not to work on Sundays.  Since we have built a business that is largely based on our sphere of influence, people respect this, and we have not lost a client yet.

Rob & Camille, I can adjust my "play" time to be during the week which makes Sundays fine for me.  But I do have my time off and have the flexibility to be able to schedule most days that my clients are available.  I am always so happy I am fortunate enough to do this and can help decide my own schedule.  Thank you for your comment.
