Every winter I hear a lot of questions and discussions about whether or not to stage a home with a seasonal theme during the winter months. I want to talk not only why you can, but why you should, and what steps to take towards brightening up the home during cold and drab winter months.

Without a staging, this completely vacant home was just a whole lot of pine, and although my staging team and I caught the vision of the homes potential the minute we walked through the door, many home buyers cannot. This home sat on the market a few months before we were brought in, with a new plan, to market the home as a second home and retreat for a local executive type -- perhaps as a gift for the family.

Like other stagings, we kept religious icons out of the plan, to appeal to the masses. We did choose a strong red theme, partly dictated by the gorgeous fire-engine-red stove, and also to really warm up the home, which was surrounded by pines and forest. We added to this shiny silvers, which also complimented the new stainless steel appliances, and we updated fixtures and cabinet hardware to pump up the sparkle. To add sophisitication, we chose tones in merlot and chocolate nuetrals in furnishings and other accents.

Not every holiday staging needs to be done in red and green, I would suggest using the color accents in the home stage design, add some texture, pine-cones, greenery, and a few sparkly bobbles here and there, and your set. There is a gleem and a special nostalgia to the home that can only be felt at this time of the year.

This home, staged in December 2006, was sold quickly thanks to a vigorous marketing plan which included a special holiday staging. Home sellers and Realtors can hire a professional stager to get the home looking its best, and the cost of a home staging --- even a holiday staging -- is typically less than the first price reduction on a home. So don't let the winter doldrums bring you or your property down, cheer things up with a unique holiday design for the real estate property, tis the season!
