Kansas City Is One Of America’s Comeback Capitals

By

Forbes.com recently included Kansas City as one of its 10 Comeback Capitals.   I found this somewhat surprising.  Especially since I’ve never even heard of a Comeback Capital.

Kansas City has reversed the relentless declines by expanding its border in the ’60s and ’70s from 80.6 square miles to 313.5 square miles during the same period. “While there has been a lot of activity in older parts of the city, a large part of the growth has been from construction in more suburban parts of the city,” says Steven Lebofsky, an urban development specialist who works in Kansas City’s Urban Planning Department.

So what exactly is a Comback Capital?   A city that has made a major comeback in popluation after losing a large portion of its popluation.

Kansas City lost more than 11% of its population in the ’70s and 3% in the ’80s, only to begin its current comeback in the ’90s.

Good information Justin, and with the new people moving in they are going to need housing.

Go Kansas City!!! I'm from KC.  Blue Springs actually. Now, I live in Huntsville Alabama.  I still consider KCMO my home. Grew up there and graduated. Moved away in the mid 90's.  Glad ot hear KC is on the rebound!

Nice to see KC on the upswing!  How much of the population lives in the newly annexed areas?

Elizabeth -- It is good too see KC on the rebound.  I think all the surrounding cities such as Blue Springs is part of the reason that the cities population is increasing.

Kent -- I'm not exactly sure.  I know a lot of people have been moving in to the Waldo area but I belive that was annexed before World War II.  I always notice a lot of new home construction right up against the borders between Kansas City and one of its suburb cities such as Raytown or Grandview.  The revitalization efforts downtown have made a huge difference and I'm sure thats bringing in a lot of people.  I just keep hoping we will get a basketball team.  Hopefully they will be better than the Chiefs.

I remember the Kansas City Kings - Sam Lacey from New Mexico State University was a rebounding & defensive machine for them!  (I'm biased, of course for former Aggies)
