Real Estate Companies Compared To "Brothels"?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with KGC Properties LLC, Tucson Property Management & Real Estate

Reading an article in the Arizona Daily Star Newspaper indicating that now is a good time to buy a home, I scrolled to the bottom and read all the comments submitted by the public.

Most of the comments were very negative toward Realtors, i.e., we are greedy, criminals, belong in jail, and the best comment (scroll down to #26) "real estate companies are brothels"

It's unfortunate that people judge people to that level based on a career - rather than who that person is.  And it doesn't just happen with real estate - I've heard people criticize police officers, car sale persons, lenders, etc.

And many dislike "these" people .... until they need one!

There is a reason why 50 - 75% of FSBOs end up hiring a Realtor; or why people purchase a car from a dealer instead of a private individual (who offers no warranties or recourse for faulty vehicles); or why people hire a lender - how else are you going to get money to buy your dream home? Don't want to pay extra for speed-enforcement - but "who ya gonna call" when that red-light runner ruins your high dollar car?

I've come across a few of these critics and while talking with them I discovered that they WILL spend hundreds of dollars every month  "in commissions":

1) At the mall retail store for a $40 t-shirt - but it had the department store name on it!

2) Their cell phone carrier who they pay about $1800 a year to and they think I could get the same great deal from their brother who works for "this" cell phone company down the road.

3) Their credit card company who they don't mind paying 20% more each month for something they got on clearance last month.

But - they refuse to pay a commission to a Realtor.

To each his own, I suppose.  And to those who say Realtors are criminals, greedy, etc., I say, what I really am is:

1) A good, upstanding, law-abiding citizen.

2) A strong supporter of the community I live in.

3) A person that donates a lot of my time and money to help those in need.

4) A mother working even harder to raise a child.

5) A great friend who is there for all those 2 am calls, a shoulder to lean on, and anything else that someone might need.

6) A daughter of a highly decorated Veteran and hard working immigrant mother.

And then I am:

A good Realtor who will help keep those who trust me up-to-date with legal real estate documents, protected with non-discriminating advertising, a sounding board for frustrations related to buying and selling a home and the person you can count on before, during and after.

Obviously newspapers are in business to stimulate a reaction. It must be a slow day if we are the targets.

Madame Gabrielle,

Thanks for an interesting take on our profession. Probably not that far from the truth. The other comments though, wow!

Hello Gabrielle, The newspaper comments are very interesting reading. Is this a good pulse on the Tucson market? If so, I'd say you have your work cut out for you!  and I loved your post!

Hello Gabrielle,

I am surprised to hear comments like this. They should be happy that realtors educate them in the buying process. As a loan officer i always tell a customer that they should stick with a realtor they like rather than calling realtors whenever they see a sign. When i was a realtor i always sign the buyer agent agreement only for a day or for the property and i use to tell them if you are not happy with me you dont have to work with me.

Gabrielle, I have read the comments on a lot of articles that have been written in the news stories, and I really have to wonder if that is all that these people have to do all day.  I mean some of them are so over the top!

Unfortunately we don't have a very good name out there but those who've had a good one know they are invaluable.

GOOD MORNING ELLIE!  It seems when the paper writes something about real estate agents - these comments surface.  It's a tough crowd crowd!  --Happy new year!  Gabrielle

GOOD MORNING RICHARD!  Thanks for the laugh (Madame!)  Geez - reading the comments I wonder how I am surviving here in Tucson - or if I am!!  Some are brutal! Thank you for the comment -- Happy New Year -- Gabrielle

GOOD MORNING MARY!  Well, I am beginning to get the sense that more people feel like this about the market than not.  I did a Localism story on a barbershop here in Tucson.  While I was in the shop talking with the owner, the other barber began talking about the shop's building which lead to a small rant about his extreme dislike for real estate agents.  It took me a few minutes to cut him off to let him know that he WAS talking to a real estate agent.  He then left and sat outside until I was done.  WOW!  And boy do I agree -- I HAVE MY WORK CUT OUT FOR ME!  Happy New Year -- Gabrielle

GOOD MORNING RAFEEQ!  I think part of the problem is people feel like Realtors don't do anything and I still come across Buyers who don't want to work with Realtors because they don't want to pay a commission.  It's just an ongoing education process.  But - with some of the comments in this article - I feel lucky that I am NOT working with some in that crowd!  Thank you for the comment -- Happy New Year -- Gabrielle

GOOD MORNING TONY AND DARCY!  I read a couple of them myself and came to the conclusion that even on a really slow real estate day, I couldn't dream up some of the things that were written!  Nice nice thought!  Happy New Year -- Gabrielle

GOOD MORNING BRIAN!  Yes, and I believe getting a good name out there just takes time, ethical work habits and allowing people a chance to get to know who you are.  Thanks for taking time to write down your thoughts!  Happy New Year -- Gabrielle
