Glengarry Glen Ross - The Best Realtor Movie of all time?

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Elite Realty, Port Coquitlam, BC 27-01262

I was reading a thought provoking Blog post by DJ Swanepoel  called The Top Ten Real Estate Movies of All Time and What We Can Learn From Them.  In his post he names his top ten Real Estate movies of all time and encourages others to comment and add theirs.

Glengarry Glen Ross

It became quite clear early on in the comments that the most memorable Real Estate Movie, among Realtors, is Glengarry Glen Ross but is it the best Real Estate movie or is is the best Real Estate Agent movie?

Glengarry Glen Ross is a 1982 play written by David Mamet. The play shows parts of two days in the lives of four desperate Chicago real estate agents who are prepared to engage in any number of unethical, illegal acts -- from lies and flattery to bribery, threats, intimidation, and burglary -- to sell undesirable real estateto unwilling prospective buyers. The play draws partly on Mamet's experiences of life in a Chicago real estate office, where he worked briefly in the late 1960s. The title of the play comes from the names of two of the real estate developments being peddled by the salesmen characters, Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms.[ -Wikipedia

In this movie which is based on the play of the same name, Real Estate Agents at Rio Rancho Real Estate Agency are portrayed in a very unfavorable light as are the owners and managers of the Agency.  The most successful agent, Al Pacino, is the most unlikeable, rude, obnoxious one of them all.  The least successful, Jack Lemon, is the most sympathetic, and needy.

The most memorable quotes from the movie are:Glengarry Glen Ross

Blake (Alec Baldwin): We're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody want to see second prize?
[Holds up prize]
Blake: Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired.

Blake: These are the new leads. These are the Glengarry leads. And to you they're gold, and you don't get them. Why? Because to give them to you would be throwing them away. They're for closers

Watching this movie is a guilty pleasure, I really enjoy it every time I see it, probably more as time goes on.  This is interesting as the original movie was made for 12.5 million dollars and only grossed 10.7 million at the box offices.  Over time it has steadily grown in popularity and has even been rated in the top 500 movies of all time by Empire Magazine. Rolling Stone magazine gave this film it's highest rating when reviewed.

What does all this say about the public perception of our profession?

Superb acting goes along way to this films popularity but I suspect that much like movies that rate all businessmen as evil and politicians as crooked this is what the public expect the massive majority of us to be 'like'.  Maybe their 'guy' or 'gal' is OK but the rest of us are scam artists in their minds.

There is much work to do with respect to raising our Profession's perceived level of honour and next time there is an office meeting or course around the topic of Ethics I think I will pay just a bit more attention and I hope you will too.

loved the movie...come on...great acting and writing altogether...Its a film....we know film and plays are stories told in a capsule...beginning middle end. Its so entertaining to those of us in life not having that perspective with our own story.    No matter....what that was a full on great combination of talent.

Other outstanding memorable movies for the cutting edge...of anything...NETWORK.

Some crazy real estate investor movies are Pacific Heights and The Money Pit.  Both movies will make you seriously rethink buying investment property.  I agree though that Glenngarry GlennRoss is far and away the best one that is specific to Realtors.
