SEO For The New Year: A What if Disaster?

I am sure many of you have noticed that Google recently updated the page ranks. For many of us this saw a higher page rank and in some cases a much higher PR! But what does PR really matter anyways, what we are really after is results right? Check out this forum entry here if you want to see what I mean because PR isn't always what its cracked up to be. From what I have read its more or less a way to get a sense of if your SEO efforts are working or not but if you regularly check the SERPs for your key words I think you can get a better sense of your SEO from that.

So what of the new year?

Well everyone is always talking about Google changing their algorithms and with good reason. Its important to stay on top of this if you want to continue to rank well. After all the only way to SEO is if you know what you are trying to optimize, right? Some of the latest talk is that Google might want to get rid of self generated back links. That is back links created by using forums and blogs. Some are speculating a full discount meaning if you put links from your blog to your site, the links will work, but it will do nothing from an SEO standpoint. Well no one knows for sure and I certainly hope that isn't true and for good reason...

My Active Rain profile page here

After the update my PR for that page jumped to a 4. But how did I generate a PR4 page in only a few months? One thing I know for sure is that the only thing linking to my profile is my comments on active rain. If you check out this post I made here you can see what commenting can do well for your SEO and the higher PR should be proof that it works. But if Google puts an axe to these sorts of back links that means my profile page is a goner and will be completely zeroed out. Not to scare you but what do you think? Personally I don't care because thats not why I comment and not the only reason I blog... but the added SEO certainly doesn't hurt!

If you have something to say please leave a comment. I will try to comment on your blog as well.

I look at Google and see a company that is working hard to keep a level playing field.  If they kill the link juice from blog comments and forum posting, it will hurt... but it will hurt my competition as well.  So, I'm not freaked.  Besides, while I like having strong SEO, I am writing for an audience and the best way to get dedicated LOCAL readers is to tell them about it in person.

I guess the thing that would suck is that for SEO purposes I can create a strong profile here and then generate back links to my blog and my website. If this is cut out there goes my free SEO. Then the only thing left for SEO is to pay for links to your website and that hurts my wallet.

Lane really does hit it on the head.

I do agree that paying for links would certainly hurt a pocket book

I'm not paying for links...  It is against my grain.  But, I wonder if there will be link trading schemes again.
